There is no incredulous look, from either Ben or Luke.

I hate those stupid longwinded explanations, because

1) They really make no sense in the context of the scene.

2) They sound like this guy:

These people really should just get over it and admit that George Lucas made a mistake. No biggie.

In a world of light-sabers, forces, midichlorians, brothers kissing sisters... maybe "parsec" just has a different meaning in that galaxy far, far away. Star Wars takes place "A long time ago", while Parsec was only defined in 1913 on Earth. We're the ones who likely have the terminology wrong 😉

This is why I think people need to calm down at Peppy Hare's "Do a barrel roll!" comment in Star Fox too. Maybe that maneuver is called a barrel roll in the Lylat system? We're talking a universe where barn yard animals fly planes against an evil monkey. :colbert:

just pointing out that i wrote this three years ago and finally (now that Solo is out) everyone agrees with me.

Solo's take was a bit less mind-numbingly stupid that the EU's, but I still wish they had just taken advantage of the Legends wipe to make it so it had simply been a matter of Han BSing the local yokels and Obiwan needing the ship too badly to call him on it. It would have been perfectly in-character and eliminated the need for overly complicated explanations. I always considered the need to make throw-away lines like that *literally* true was always emblematic of the worst issues in the EU. I mean the worst issues aside from the frequently putrid writing that made Anakin opining on sand look like Chaucer, of course.

What do you mean "agrees with you"? The concept of him doing the run in a shorter distance (not time) was accepted by virtually everyone as as soon as it was pointed out the "mistake" about parsec being a distance and not a time.

This is true, but I think it's still generally regarded as a mistake. Just a mistake that could be explained away. He made a lot of mistakes that could be explained away.

And I thought it was interesting in Solo that the characters still seemed to be using parsec like it was a unit of time, but Han also took a shortcut. So people who never realized that it's a unit of distance could watch it without being confused (thinking he just made the run faster), and people who knew about the mistake could be satisfied with the explanation.
