I suspect it's because the film:
makes light of incredibly dangerous and implausible traps that wouldn't be at all acceptable in a kids movie today (most of those stunts would leave you brain-damaged/paralysed/dead 🙂);
gives a wonderfully dated snapshot of the US; and
the family is so charmingly dysfunctional and the kids, including our young protagonist, are such little turds 😉
