I love SCSI

I just got my SCSI setup finished. I'm doing a CD->CD copy w/ a SCSI CD-ROM & SCSI CD-RW @ 12 with a whoipping 2% CPU usage 🙂 I think that 2% is because of winamp too.

SCSI is great!

I have 7 devices without all the cpu overhead.
.........now what to upgrade?

I'm amd now.... maybe I'll give the Northwoods a shot

<< How well do SCSI components take higher FSBs? >>

my guess is only the SCSI card would be a concern as the SCSI bus should still run at the same speed. If you had a quality SCSI card though I think it would be able to handle a fairly high speed bus. These things are designed for quality from the get go, so I would gues sit would be good.

i had my system up to 155 fsb on this scsi system a long time ago. i havent tried it since going to amd. yes scsi can very expensive. my latest buy was a 73 GB seagate cheetah for this system and also got a dvdram drive. what the heck 7 devices all on scsi whats the next item going to be

cost has been alot over the years

cdr cost me new 200 dollars
ultraplex 40x max cost me 65 used at the time
teac 32x cdrom also used cost me 35
zip 100 cost me 45
pioneer dvdrom 10x cost me 75 through the forums
dvdram its costing me some as it is used
73 GB cost me 475 through the forums
18.2 GB seagate cheetah cost me 365 back 3 yrs ago
2940u2w bare card cost me 125 at the time
8 connector factory round cable cost me 75 dollars to have made
4 connector lvd cable with termination cost me 35

i think that covers the cost for the moment

which scsi cards do you guys use? i use a tekram dc390-u2w. great card for the money IMO. although it seems that adaptec has come down in price lately.
i have on my scsi bus
a 9.1 gig ide harddrive
a plextor 4x12 cdr (with CADDY!)
pioneer slot load dvd
and a zip 100 (I think i paid $100 for that)

the only thing that i would like is a 10k rpm drive, but they are just too loud to be in my bedroom

2940U2W good card for its time just not as fast as 29160 cards..........since my 18.2 GB cheetah isnt U160 capable there is no reason to go to a 29160 . Cause it wont increase the transfer rate any better

<<what is the difference between IDE and SCSI>>>

Unfortunately, I dont really have a spare 3 days to explain...

Suffice to say, it's a different interface - has less overhead because the commands are processed by a SCSI processor rather than the system's CPU.
IDE doesn't have ah heck all overhead since the implementation of DMA, but still more than SCSI.
Also, SCSI has the advantage of superior daisy-chaining, multiple types of devices (scanners, tape, HDD, even floppy), and, of course, speed!
ATA133 isn't quite as good as Ultra320...

Go SCSI!

High FSBs ?

Well, Avansys cards dont like it. If you can keep your PCI bus speed down, then sure, but the higher speeds stop the BIOS from intializing in most cases.
Without onboard BIOS, any scsi card is likely to handle at least a slight increase in bus speed.
Adaptec cards love it, and although my PCI bus is 44mhz (133/3... yes, /3), my HP Netraid controller works fine.

So basically, get a high-quality card, and you wont have problems.

(BTW: I have seen avansys and tekram cards bring a system to the speed of your average dead camel...)

SCSI is awesome! I have IBM 36LZX (10,000 rpm) + Plextor SCSI CD-ROM + Yamaha CD-RW connected to Adaptec 39160 and everything works simply fast and beautiful. Once you go SCSI, you'll never go back, he he 🙂

Geek version of "Once you go black you cant go back" - Scary Movie 2

Please correct me if I incorrectly stated the quote. 😉
