I LOVE sci fi movies that intelligently deal with near-future and its social impact...

I'm a huge fan of Contact (Jodie Foster). It had everything... astronomy, realistic portrayal of society reacting to it, abeautiful father-daughter relationship and even religion.

Also a fan of Gattaca, Children of Men and even Ghost in the Shell.

See the trend of what I like? Can you recommend more? Pop shit like iRobot and Minority Report doesn't count.

if you're open minded about anime, u can watch gundam 00. it deviates from the traditional mainstream series in that it deals with the oil crisis, the development of solar energies, and other various up and coming technologies that we are pursuing in the present-day.

or u can watch the matrix. just the first one, though :p

No gundam please. I like more serious movie-scale anime... like Ghost, Akira, Spirited Away etc... there are many great ones but that's not what this thread is looking for.

If I wanted mecha sci fi with incredible depth (or annoying), I got Eva for that. :)

Hmm, would maybe something like BladeRunner work for you? Dealing with "more human than human" androids and the social implications

I was going to recommend Gattaca but I see you already watched it. 12 Monkey (Bruce Willis) is a similar type of movie.

Fight club could also be considered the same genre. And maybe A Clockework Orange (in the 80's maybe). Neither are sci fi, but are worth the watch regardless.

I just watched "Sunshine" -- I'd recommend it to any Sci-Fi fan in general. Not a perfect movie, but good Sci-fi is hard to come by lately.

Seen it and didn't leave quite an impact on me but I remember liking it.

That's the best type of Sci-Fi. I just watched A Scanner Darkly, and was pleasantly surprised. Check it out if you haven't.

Then again, anything based on Philip K Dick's work is, at the very minimum, good.

Stay away from The Island. It starts off promising....then becomes too much Michael Bay. No one ruins a perfectly good story better than that travesty of a filmmaker ;)

The movie was excellent until the last 30 minutes. Its like the writer got to a point and didn't know what the fuck to do next. So he took some acid and continued writing anyway.

edit: as zinfamous said, A Scanner Darkly is excellent. The book is worth a read as well. It has a lot more dark comedy than the movie portrayed. And it also gives meaning to the title, something that the movie didn't do.

I can't stress enough how much I enjoyed it. I love that paranoia-suspense genre. One of the most tolerable performance by Keanu...probably b/c his appearance is scrambled most of the time, and playing a drugged-out brain cell is right up his ally. :D

QFT, Keanu's best performance to date. He was the perfect choice for Bob Arctor.

LOL, I think I had to watch that 3 times before it finally sunk in all the way. Good budget sci-fi flick. Also highly recommend! Good taste sir!
