I would be using that a lot and doing stuff like that but my computer is too slow to use photoshop. Maybe not too slow but you need to have 64mb Ram and I don't.

I love photoshop too. I made an awesome desktop background, but I just deleted off my server yesterday.

hubbs..don't have 64 megs of RAM? That is definitely something I would invest in. I had 64, but just purchased another 64 yesterday, and I notice the difference.

Problem with Photoshop is they charge so much for it. I would buy it if it costed $300 CDN or less for the full version, but it is too expensive for me to buy. So instead, I use Corel PhotoPaint which can pretty much do everything that Photoshop can do, except it's a lot cheaper. The problem is... no one respects you if you have skills in any other raster program besides Photoshop. People in the industry are so elitist in that respect. Since Photoshop is the industry standard, they think you are terrible just because you don't use their program.

Seriously... I hear people who say that PhotoPaint can't do this and can't do that which Photoshop can do, then I show them that they can. Then they bring up something else, and I show them they can. Then they just go off on how inferior everything else is. And Adobe really takes advantage of this Mac-like fanaticism by pricing it way out of any reasonable person's range.

In the end, a person's skill with the program is a lot more important than the program used.

Sorry for the rant...

I can do ya one better than that, Handle. I have access to Photoshop 5.0 and won't even bother with it. I've been using a lowly "SE" version of Ulead's Photo Impact for a few years. I use it strictly for tweaking photos and scans.

With Photo Impact, I can adjust the color balance within a couple mouse clicks. With Photoshop it becomes some kind of scientific experiment or something!

That's 90% of what Photoshop should be used for but it's become bloated beyond usability... quick usability anyway. So when I need to edit a picture, I'll crop, size and change formats with LView and adjust color and focus with Photo Impact. I don't need Photoshop at all!

Now if you're talking about creating art, Painter rules. There is no way Photoshop can match it at this point. I'm sure they will add some of it's features in time, but for now Painter is unique. And speaking of adding features to the already bloated Photoshop, why does it suck so bad at text manipulation? The one time I wanted to make use of it, it failed me. I had to use Illustrator to do the job. I don't know how they justify the price. Must be some kind of snob appeal or something...

ornery, you obviously haven't spent time messing with photoshop. All the things you talked about are some of the easiest things you can do in photoshop. Color balance, changing formats, cropping, resizing and all that is easy. Photoshop also has incredible filters that can add effects that are really cool. The airbrush is great for eliminating something from a picture and the lighting effects can make any photo look very profession. Text manipulation is great. You can do almost anything to the text, from gradients to putting a photo inside of it. Photoshop may seem daunting at first, but once you play with it and fine where everything is, it becomes extrememly easy to use.

Handle,
Photoshop 5 LE is all over the place -- Maxtor was giving it away with the larger harddrives, and I think it is almost the same as the 5.5. I have it on the machine I use to manipulate the photos from my Nikon CoolPix 950 and it is tops so far as I am concerned -- but my needs (and skills) are simple. At any rate, try to lay hands on one of the Maxtor/Adobe Photoshop 5.0 LE CDs and I am sure you will be happy with the results.

I have one of those maxtor ones and I don't even need it. I don't know what to do with it.

I just got the Photoshop WOW book for free thanks to a post in Hot Deals. When I get a chance I'm gonna try to impove my skills. I've been using it for years but still consider myself a novice. I've tried just about everything out there and find that Good Ole PS fills my modest needs the best. I'd like to pick up a good masking plugin one of these days. Anyone tried Corel's? Compaired it to Extensis?

Yeah, I know I could get Photoshop LE cheap or free (actually, I should get a new hard drive soon as my current one is getting full), but I don't honestly know if it would be any better than PhotoPaint (it probably wouldn't be). Plus, when looking for graphics jobs, most companies wouldn't be impressed to see Photoshop LE on the list, and I'm sure the lack of experience with specific functions would be painfully obvious.

I don't know what LE is missing (I should probably find out) but my experience is most Special/Limited Editions disable all the complex and worthwhile features.

I'm quite happy with PhotoPaint, but most people look down upon it. Most people who look at my work assume it was done with Photoshop.

Oh, and Doomer. I hear that Corel Knockout is decent, although I've never used it myself. Pretty expensive stuff, but, if you do a lot of masking of complex objects with complex backgrounds, I guess it'd be worth it.

I'm still using v5.0. I decided to wait as the upgrade to 5.5 isn't any cheaper than a regular upgrade. I saw knockout at Best buy but didn't notice the price. :( I wouldn't mind paying as long as I knew I'd be getting what I think I'm getting. With SW, you never know. :(

Well 5.5 is basically PS + ImageReady(and a couple other features). Depends if you work alot with the Web too.

It's not grossly expensive on an absolute scale, but it is quite expensive in my opinion. Mind you, you know what I think about the price of Photoshop, so that should give you an idea of how expensive it really is.

Anyway, if you look on Corel's site (I'm sure that price is a rip-off) they have it listed as $239.00.

Ah bullsh!t ltk007, I can crop and size a picture in LView before friggen Photoshop can load! And that's no bull!

Changing color balance in Photoshop is forking insane! In PhotoImpact, I can use an eyedropper to select a gray area of the picture and it's done, save and I'm out of there. All the while, Photoshop would still be loading!

And Photoshop won't manupulate text on a shaped path. I'm not saying PhotoImpact will either, but for what Photoshop costs, it should be able to.

Thats why if you use photoshop, you leave it running in the background when you want to either work on the web or do photo work. I guess if you were to start the program each time you had one thing to do with a picture, it would get kind of tedious, but that would be retarded.
