I spent some time this morning fiddling with the UI and now I have it just right.

http://db5440c3.fb.joyent.us/Screenshot.png

- standard ubuntu 8.04 with clearlooks compact (makes everything smaller)
http://martin.ankerl.com/2007/...s-compact-gnome-theme/
- metabox window borders
- edited the theme files to further get rid of padding, large borders and make everything even more compact.
- set smooth screen fonts.
- set focus follows mouse, but no autorise (that is, mousing over a window means I can type in it, without bringing it to the foreground)

Now I just need a second monitor and I'll be set.

I tried very hard to get into Ubuntu, everyone says its the easiest.
But I still preferred WinXP. Have experimented with about 20 or so distros over the years.
The only ones I like are Live DVD's. They're good for troubleshooting if your system gets messed up.

I have this sweet os called windows vista that looks pretty damn good for coding. I also use this os called mac. It make stuff look good also, I don't have to modify the way anything looks it looks so good.

I heard of this OS called "mac"
It's an awful lot like if somebody took FreeBSD and a tweaked version of Xorg and then just built a new GUI .... And then, they charge people for it! AHH HAHAHAHHAHA.

Gotta give Apple some credit though, they were smart enough to pretty much cherry pick one of the best kernels out there since they knew they were not smart enough to write a better one.

With windows and osx, you use what they give you and if you don't like something, too fucking bad. For example, focus-follow-mouse is impossible in OS X and neither can really give you the option of making things more compact (like reducing the internal padding of buttons).

With linux, everything is stored in text files, so when I installed the themes and did not quite like them, I just opened their conf files and changed a few numbers.

Also, windows can't even compare with linux/unix for development. I don't know why anyone would willingly choose it.

OS X is actually pretty big with a lot of techies because its a full unix system underneath, so you get the command line, unix utils etc. But like I said, with Apple its their way or the highway, and their way often leaves something to be desired. I have an iPhone and it works in a similar way, so I'll likely trade it for an Android phone when they get some more hardware out there.

Well, way to flaunt your ignorance, userland is FreeBSD, Kernel isn't.

Look into Darwin and you'll find some answers, seriouslly, look into that because you really don't have a clue.

I love getting opendourks all peeved. You guys are great. So sit there at your desk with some sort of an illusion that you are liberated by not paying for software that locks you down and is completely worthless and "impossible" to use. When you're done, lace up your Nike's, get in your mass produced car, fill up your tank at whatever price they are charging you, drive to starbucks, head to this great school or work, sit at your cube or desk and do whatever the boss or teacher tells you, then come on back home and start all over again. Fuck the system! We didn't pay for our OS baby!

:music:
1-Don't push us, 'cuz were close to the edge
We're tryin not to lose our head, uh, hah, hah, hah
I get the feelin' sometimes they make me wonder
Why you wanna take us under, why you wanna take us under..

Can't nobody take my pride
Can't nobody hold me down, Oh no
I got to keep on movin'

Man, I really wish I could get Ubuntu, or any other distro for that matter, to work on my system. I've got a new HP DV5 laptop, and the new ABGN wireless network interface card that is installed in there will only work with the latest kernels, and it only works once. After I shut down the machine, I have to disassociate from the AP, and the re-connect everything, including inputting the password.

Why does open source suck? I think companies that charge extravagant prices from consumers for shoddy OS's and other software suck. Stuff you get for free that works just fine sucks for you?
