Just talked to a real brain doner...

Guy : I can't check my mail
Me : Let me check the server logs... it says here "invalid password"
Guy : So what are you going to do about it?
Me : Well... you need to login to our customer control panel and change the password for the e-mail account.
Guy : I don't want to.
Me : So... you don't want the E-maill account?
Guy : W$%#$ YES I DO! I WANT MY DAMN MAIL!
Me : ok you need to change your password
Guy : TELL ME THE PASSWORD
Me : OK MFDGJI(#@!KLSKJKGDJJIER(UFSD (encrypted passwords 🙂)
Guy : I NEVER #$%#$% MADE MY PASSWORD THAT!
Me : It's encrypted, I can't tell you your password. You are the admin go to (our url) and change it there ok?
Guy : WHATEVER!

click

🙂

Surely you have the ability to change his password?

When I did ISP support we could only see encrypted passwords but we could change them though.

Also, it occasionally happened that an account would become corrupted on our servers - The customer was typing the password right, but would get a login/pwd error.

So someone can call up on the phone and change passwords? If a password is to be changed for their main account, we reset it and give em a new one, but it only goes to the admin contact... If the admin contact is bad they need to fax us, or give us the last few digits of the credit card...

Too many disgruntled web developers who got fired have tried to pull of some crazy stuff had made us do this...

btw, I have no patience if someone yells or swears at me...

oh great he is on the phone right now 🙁

where i work, we have the ability to change anybody's password, but for certain categories of accounts, we *must* have them change it themselves. one advantage is that it puts responsibility where it belongs: on the user.

They had to be able to verify security info to do that.

Hehe, he called back and apologized 🙂. He managed to login to our control panel and he changed the password and it worked...

I would say I have 5 people I will change passwords for... over the year I have worked here, I've gotten to know them really well. I still probably
shouldn't play favorites but one of them is really cute 😉

wow. i've never had anybody call back to apologize...

I had one guy yell at me so hard, he said my boss was a b!tch, and that everyone here sucked! He called back later and apologized and commended me for my patience 🙂

I've had many clients tell me I am remarkably calm on the phone... little do they know how seething I am inside 🙂.

I get the same thing, people frequently comment on that after they've called in freaking out. A calm, knowledgeable person on the other end of the line can do wonders.

I used to work on computers at school, and am the computer person in the family so I have spent alot of time with customer service/tech support. I am always polite on the phone and always manage to get what I need, even if the tech person is a moron, you know the new guy that they just pulled off the street.
