I just came on the forums while sitting by the fireplace. We fired it up for the first time this season (32 degrees outside). We haven't put the heat on yet and didn't plan to until the middle of November sometime. It took the temp from around 54 degrees up to 66 with like 10 logs. This is my first house and my first fireplace. It's great! We got all our wood for free too (cut down around 8 trees this summer - here's a video of us cutting one down: youtube).

I have a nice setup in the basement. It's partially finished and the fireplace is on the finished side. My SO and I sat down here watching season 7 of X-Files on the 32" Olevia... and decided not to let the heat go to waste so we pulled out the sofa-bed and we decided to sleep down here. I've never slept by a fire before. I'm sure it's going to be nice! We have a partially functional bathroom down here too so all the amenities of the master bedroom save the lush queen bed.

Anyway, just sharing my growing love of fireplaces! Thanks for reading.

To anyone else who is going to watch the video, skip to the last 5 seconds.

I stupidly killed the pilot light in the summer. Now, I have no idea how to turn it back on.

how old is the house? And how long have you lived there. Don't forget to have the chimney cleaned ever so often. you don't want a chimney fire.

I wish I had a fireplace, or even a wood stove. A while back, though, our chimney collapsed, so that sort of put a dent in any fireplace plans we had. :(

Thats why I like having a gas fireplace. Sure I miss the sound of the wood burining, but it's so much easier for a lazy person like me

We have a wood burning stove insert in our fireplace. Can run the thing for hours on 2-3 logs. Can get the house up into the 90s easy as the stove gets up to 600+ degrees.

When I wake up on a weekend in the winter, the first thing I do is turn off the heat. THen I crank up the fire.

I did this too. When I had the heater cleaned the technician said I shouldn't have but didn't give me a reason why not. All he did to turn it on was turn the pilot switch to on (which brings gas to the pilot) and light a striker near it... bingo. It's pretty easy. I plan on turning it off again, unless I'm informed of a reason not to.

Less posting on ATOT, more bouncing your wife's vagoo off the sofa bed by the fire.

Whoops, I shoulda thought of that. Maybe tonight ;)

Yes, let's put more smoke into the air...

I hate your fireplace.

I wonder if its better or worse than keeping a furnace at a higher temp (70-75) for a long period of time?

The house is from the 1950s. We had the fireplace cleaned this year in preparation for having fires. I watched the guys do it and I don't think I'm ever going to pay someone $200 for that kind of easy job again. I'll go buy the equipment (some sweeps) and do it myself next time.

I really want to get one. My mom has one at her house and, like you said, she can burn 2-3 logs per night and its like 70s in her house... whereas I burned like 15 or so. I think they're well worth it. Without the insert, it took a good couple of hours for the temperature to come up just a few degrees... After that though, it jumped to like a 10+ degree increase. I guess the fire burns stronger as time goes on.

The fireplace that is in my fiancées place is too small for me to comfortably use it. I'm used to a bigger one like the one at my parents' house. We never used it that much, but we did on the really cold days to keep the bills down. We usually have a tree or two on the property fall down every year so we just burn those usually. Yay for free heat!
