I love my AMD...

A 235 dollar 3000 A64 can compete with a 400 dollar 3.2 P4 or a 275 dollar 3.0 P4.

This is just the first time I ever had such a powerful CPU...Just too bad soltek ran out of freaken mobo's until 12/29.

*Cries 🙁

So what if the CPU is nothing more than a crippled 3200 with half the cache disabled? I say thats worth half the price for just about the same performance. I'm spending 200 dollars less, for the low cost of 2 frames per second that could likely be made up by overclocking. I'll take it.

I decided to wait until I see the nforce 3 250 and see what it does compared to the sis boards.

Yes, 2 ghz or 2000 mhz with 512k cache. Stock that is. Very easy to get it to 2170-2200.

I'm just here to keep this an AMD only thread.

If you check Regs "My Rig" page it says "AMD A64 3000 1800MHz @ 2100MHz", so I wasn't sure.

Are you trying to say it CAN'T complete with a P4 3.2 ? Did you read Anand's review ?

ditto

SIS southbridges have predominately been the best for years (IDE performance wise and other features) so I dont expect 250 series to pull anything special out 🙂

No, I didn't mention the P4 at all. Regs implied "the P4 sucks since the $235 3000+ A64 can compete well with a $400 P4". I just replyed saying that the price is a bad argument - since the same price argument could be used to say the $400 3200+ A64 sucks. Regs can give other reasons that the P4 sucks - but price shouldn't be his only consideration otherwise he is implying that the 3200+ A64 sucks.

Ahhhhh. I have to agree with you there. At this time, any cpu costing more than the Athlon64 3000+ ($220) is not a good "bang for the buck" or even smart (unless you have to have the speed)

Wait though...people have said the Barton "feels" faster than the Tbred B in that it's smoother at performing usual tasks.

Has anyone used both a 3000+ and a 3200+? Any comment on the extra 512k cache making the chip "seem" faster and smoother at many tasks?

Whoops, fixed!

That was a jobe btw...heh.

With the Barton around, spending any more than 100 is kinda ridiculous

Even OC'ed to XP3200+ levels, my Athlons64 3000+ at 2.2 ghz rips that to shreds. for about $130 more ? I'll take my Athlon64. And you are not guaranteed to get up to 3200+ levels. A couple of people can't do that they said.

And you are not guaranteed to get to 2.2GHz on that either. Although I admit that your processor is superior I won't be giving up my XP 3200+ anytime soon. I'll wait for later processor revisions, more chipsets and as always, more competition between manufacturers.

I could also point out that with Tbred B 1700+ and 1800+ chips at under $50, there's no point in buying a Barton.
In context though, it depends on your budget. $50 more or $100 more in terms of the whole PC is probably just a relatively small fraction more money.

I can't wait for that new N-Force!

It's usually best to wait on any new CPU untill there's a chipset that people rave about. I've yet to see a chipset I like for the A64.

They're going for 160 dollars, yes?

And here is hard OCP's benchmarks that proves MarkFw's point:

Link

UTk2003 CPU test scores the NF2- 3200 at 65.5 while the VIA-A64 3200 scores 81.5 . And If anybody can find a benchmark on Anand to showcase, I would be thankful.
