I love melatonin

Amen brother, ingesting a hormone that your body produces naturally seems like a bad idea to me.

It's better than almost all the alternatives. Yes it is "many times" what is produced in the body but because it's taken orally does not mean it all gets absorbed and gets to the appropriate receptors.

The problem is the "If one is good two must be better and if two are better..." mentality and it's for occasional use ONLY.

If one doesn't abuse melatonin it's not a bad thing.

I like that stuff too. Does it actually work better if you take more than one? I was told it would actually negate the affect. I find it does not always help me especially when I'm going from night shift to day shift, since it will be like 2am and I'm still wide awake and just can't fall asleep.

Actually, wonder if you can inject melatonin right in your blood. That would probably give a nice kick to bed. :awe:

Referring to the OP's first post, I don't know what dosage a fistful of melatonin is.

So what's the correct dosage???

There's the MIT study that says that 0.3 mg/daily is enough and that any more is less effective in treating insomnia. http://newsoffice.mit.edu/2001/melatonin-1017

There's also dosage levels from the Mayo Clinic for different medical conditions. http://www.mayoclinic.org/drugs-supplements/melatonin/dosing/hrb-20059770
Summarized here in a table: http://www.melatonin.com/melatonin-dosage.php

From the Mayo Clinic
"For circadian rhythm sleep disorders in people with and without vision problems, melatonin has been taken by mouth as a single dose of 0.5-5 milligrams before bed or as a daily dose for 1-3 months.

For delayed sleep phase syndrome, melatonin has been taken by mouth in doses of 0.3-6 milligrams, with five milligrams being most common, daily before sleeping for two weeks to three months."

I take 1 mg daily. My approach was to start with the lower level, 0.3 mg, and work my way up to a dosage that helps me sleep and doesn't give me any side effects.

Never tried melatonin, maybe I will pick some to next time I'm out. Normally I take 12.5-50mg of diphenhydramine (benedryl). It isn't supposed to work if you keep taking it but it seems to for me.

I use melatonin as well. really helps. It seems to quiet my brain and stop all those random thoughts going through my head when I lay down and turn off the lights. I only take 1 pill, whatever is on the directions on the bottle.

I did take 2 a few times and I had some really weird dreams each time.

Doesn't work for me. Nod off for an hour and then wake up. Then I'm in an even worse fix since that was like taking a nap and now I'm kind of semi-rested and REALLY can't fall asleep.

I've been told I should try some. Even as a kid I have had a hard time getting to sleep as my brain is constantly in overdrive it seems. Then finally just like C3PO it is like someone flips a switch on the back and boom I'm asleep, but that process can typically take an hour or more. Try to go to bed earlier? yeah right, won't fall asleep until 1 AM anyway.

Then trying to wake up in the morning is like trying to start an old cranky mower. Takes forever for me to actually come to.

I drastically reduced my nighttime GERD symptoms with low-dose melatonin. Strange but true.

Too much can induce depression.

My sleep has greatly improved since getting into fitness. Its still hard some nights, I usually will feel really tired after eating dinner for a few hours, then be wide awake until I make my self go lay in bed for awhile.
