I have never used earphones to listen to my ipod.

Direct connection to subwoofer and component speaker amplifiers in car = Kickass.

I love my iPods but the earbuds are garbage. That's the first thing I do is get rid of them and buy a pair of Sony or Panasonic earbuds (the kind with the soft rubber that go in your ear canal).

Check out the JVC Marshmallows, they're highly recommended over at head-fi.org and, once they're burned in for about 20 hours, they truly are pretty amazing for the price ($20).

i've been trying the marshmallows the past two days. they are excellent for the price ($8 from buy.com after googlecheckout), a lot better than the koss plugs i was using. still burning in, hope the midrange comes out a bit more. better than any sony or panasonic stuff in the under $50 price range.

I went up to Best Buy and got some $180 ear plugs. Kept them a day and returned 'em.

Went to Target and got some $20 ear plugs. They had better sound.

As far as *stock* earbuds go, the ipod's are pretty damn good. You can clearly buy much better if you spend the dough, but they're not TOTAL crap.

I got these in black from newegg for $80

wish I would have heard about the marshmallows. but the one's above are great. Infinitely better than the standard headphones.

The midrange still hasn't come out much in mine and they've been burned in about 20-25 hours. I'm thinking about doing this mod on mine to see how it sounds. The good thing about these is even if it sounds like crap modded, it's only $8 to buy a new one :p

I have them. They sound pretty good and are cheaply priced.

i remember the mx500's being decent, but i haven't listened to mine in years so my memory of them is cloudy.:) i'd recommend the koss ksc-75's if you don't mind the over-the-ear type. one of the best values around.
