I learned about such things through school (eg: learn the process of how politics work, how we are socialized), but it never made me want to be active in such things. Being hip-hop has given me a platform for how I go about doing what I do.

I hate hip-hop. I also listen to rock and most of its sub-genre's. Rock is not the only thing I listen to though. So I guess I'm here to prove you wrong. In addition to my rock albums, I have a respectable collection of classical music, some Johnny Cash tunes, blues, and jazz.

Perhaps you are mistaken, I think you hate "rap" more than you hip-hop, cuz hip-hop is not just rap. Hip-hop embodies so much more. The majority of people are disillusioned to this fact.
