I lost my first HD!

actually, I'm losing it. I've owned a huge number of maxtor drives, and this is the first to die on me. Its not dead yet, but there is a high pitched squeal that is makes when its lying flat, so I have it hanging out of my case, and you can't hear it now.

Anyone have that happen before? The squeal causes headaches quickly.
 
The headaches from the squeals are probably caused by flashbacks from the movie Deliverance.

Just throw that Maxtor drive out in the trash where it belongs and replace it with a WD drive. You'll feel much better.
 
No, no, no, never replace a Maxtor with something out of the trashcan *cough* WD *cough*.

So what's the matter? Is it dead or not? Is it still operational despite the noise?
 
Run Maxtors fitness utility program which you can get from their website,you should have no problem with RMA if it`s faulty ,Maxtor are quick in this department 🙂.

I've had my fair share of HDDs fail on me. Two WD and one Maxtor. None of my IBMs have failed me yet, although, I have only drives from the 60GXP series.

My solution that has worked for a long time: Go Seagate and never look back.

Good luck if you have to RMA it. In the mean time, backup that sucker ASAP!

I've never had any drives fail on me yet....

i had a samsung 560MB with lots of bad sectors once though.
 
Maxtor makes good drives, I've only had one fail on me. I've lost 2 IBW drives as well. Never had a problem with a Seagate though. Only had 1 WD drive, and it died right after warranty expired.

I have a couple little 10000 RPM scsis that tend to "squeal" and it does get annoying every now and again.
 
If it's not dead you can't say you've lost it...

I've had 2 western digital's go bad on me... neither died though... one got really slow, and the other had bad sectors developing so it was done... both my RMA'd drives work very well... glad I got em 🙂
 
I have over a dozen maxtor drives, and this is the first that has gone bad. It isn't dead, but there is no way I'm keeping a drive that makes a squeal loud enough to give you a headache within a few minutes.

IMO, maxtor is the best all around drive, even though I had one die.

I've already sent a RMA in, and it should be here monday. Then I can ghost the image over, I did the advanced RMA, and maxtor is only one city over, 15 minute drive.

I didn't know maxtor had a drive fitness, I know IBM does, but I'll try maxtors.

I've lost enough computer parts to build a fully functional computer 😕 (not all at once, I just have bad luck with computer parts, my most recent loss two weeks ago... my 7 month old 22" crt :|)

I have 3 Maxtor drives (2 of which are the more recent DiamondMax 60 series) and they run 24/7 and I haven't had a single problem with them.

I can attest for Maxtor's RMA service, it's very fast nearly hassle free. (Had an older Quantum drive die on me on a super hot summer's day, strange that I had a fan on it... and Maxtor RMA'ed without a problem)

My friends think that I'm a walking ESD field 😛

one of my friends (lordaccord on this forum) has a 330mb maxtor drive that is now 8 years old and still running

btw, if you go to pricewatch I believe the maxtor drives are cheaper than all of the competitor's drives with similar specs... maxtor makes value drives, dont expect them to be ther best and cheapest, things just dont work that way

I don't understand why you keep saying the drive died it's still fully operational, yes this noise is bad, but it isn't dead yet. I've seen some Maxtor drives that makes this abnormal sound right out of the box and they work fine throughout their lifespan, it's just some minor problem with the bearings, and it doesn't affect reliability. Im not saying you shouldn't back up though; since the drive is still working, back it up and RMA it if you can convince Maxtor, which should be easy.
 
its a good sign it will die though. It's been running fine for months, until all of a sudden it started this.

It is a DiamondMax 60 drive, very surprised it failed.
 
I dont really wanna get in a war over which company is best, but I have to say ive had a lot of luck with quantum... I have had at least 6 quantum drives over the years -- 210mb, 340mb, 640mb, 2 x 6.4gb (1 scsi, 1 ide), and 20gb. amazingly, all of this drives still work
 
Quantum was a good brand but is now part of Maxtor. I use Maxtor drives and while I have lost one in the last couple years, thier RMA service is the best...they replaced my bad 13.6gb drive with a 15gb.

They are very quiet drives so if it is making noise, back up your data & start the RMA process, they will take good care of you.
 
I just lost a Harddive on Friday. IBM 20GB 60GXP. Won't dectect at boot :-(
arrrg.

My first HD lost aswell :-(
 
well, the drive just died. Loud clicking sounds come out of it, and it was almost done copying over the files with the XP transfer setting, but the thing froze when it started clicking, and I got nothing off of it.

Anyone know of a good way to give it one last chance?
 
There's not much difference when any brand comes out of the factory, other than the IBM problem drives. They are very shock sensitive and thats where they get damaged, even in shipping.

Only had 2 out of about 12 hard drives fail over the last bunch of years but they aren't as tough now but lot cheaper. Maxtor has an excellent support service and if you visit the site, download their maxblast utility to run diagnostics as the tech rep will have you do that anyway. Call them after that and if you have warranty left you'll get another within the week.
