I lost an AGP slot. Should I go with PCIEx or just PCI??

I bought a new Dell PC. I was planning to stick my 8500 in it but was saddened to see that it didn't have an AGP slot. It has a PCIEx slot and PCI slots.

So, should I get a PCIEx card or a PCI card? Are the PCIEx cards more expensive just because it's new technology? I don't really care as long as I can play the only game I play - GTA Vice City, at 800x600... in which my old 8500 served me just fine.

Any recommendations? Thanks.

PCIe definately.
i would go for the 6600GT, but it costs around $200

There's really no "good deal" on low-end PCIe right now. You could try scooping an x300 off eBay that got pulled from another Dell/Gateway/OEM rig, but I'd say bite the bullet, grab yourself a 6600 or 6600GT, and enter the new world of gaming.

Lol... thanks ... but no, thanks. I've tried entering the world of gaming... there hasn't been a single game that I could play for more than 30 minutes without getting bored... with the exception of GTA Vice City... and even with that - I need to work on my thesis now, so I don't have time...

About the X300 - I've heard that it's crappy... I know I can get it for like less than $50 on ebay, but is it comparable to an 8500? I don't want anything less....

What the hell kinda of crappy games are you playing? Get over to Software/Apps/Games and check out the free thread. Or just google "WolfET" and get busy.

The X300 is comparable to a 9200 - the X300SE, a 9200SE. They're both going to be worse than your 8500.

The X300 (NOT the SE!) is definately better than the 8500. I have a GeCube X300 256mb, and it is a supreme overclocker. I got it to a clock of 450/500 without problems. I can play GTA Vice City 1024x768 max settings 6XAA and 16XAF

Do you do other 3D apps? If not, and you're strictly a Windows user (not Linux), go with a a PCIe ATi card. They still have superior 2D image quality than nVidia cards IMO. I almost wish I didn't play games, it would make my PC a lot cheaper.

Nope, no 3d apps... only app I use that is graphics-related is Photoshop... and not professionally, so i can get by with a cheaper card.... Well, I haven't decided, because I bought my 8500 for like $70, but can't find a PCIe card for that much except the X300 SE....

So, why exactly can't I buy a decent PCI card?? I mean, for $70 I can prolly get something much better PCI than PCIe...

nope, almost any PCI-E card is superior to a PCI card in pretty much every way. If you're not a gamer, just get something like this newegg.com $70, can't beat that.

edit: personally tho, if I were you, i'd get something like this newegg.com, you'd be able to do some light gaming, and it wouldn't run like junx
