My pet (Kitty Kitty) , the African grey parrot, whom I got for a xmas gift 6 years ago, passed away a few short days ago.
He had developed a cyst under one of his wings. We took him to the vet and the vet said, "WOW you really caught this early. You should treat it now before an infection sets in."

We followied his advice and came back the following Monday, after some research and some hard decision making. We thought it was best to do it now as our options were do it now or do it later. Sadly he did not make it post surgery. The vet said it was the first time he has had a bird die like that post surgery. The vet said, he had a heart attack and they tried to revive him.

I will never know what really happen.. Not that it matters at this point I have lost a friend.

Kitty Kitty here.

Sorry for your loss. I had an African Gray named Auk. He died quite a few years ago now though. We woke up and he was just on the bottom of the cage. They are quite amazing birds, the stuff that guy would say was gold.

Sorry about your loss :(. I've heard that African Greys are some amazingly intelligent parrots and they bond well with their owners.

My african grey likes to ask for food, then dump his food, then ask for more food.

It's fun.

I'm sorry to hear that.
I had a parakeet once named Bart. He would eat seeds off my tongue and out of my bellow (ace ventura style) He flew out the door one day.. then not even a week later I was walking down the street and he came out of nowhere and landed on my head!

That was years ago, he's not around anymore now. It's tough losing a friend.

Poor birdy.

Parrots are great. My mother has one, they have a personality all their own. Tweets happily when my mother is near it (at the computer) and when she leaves to get food in the kitchen, she says it hoots loudly, confused and angry till she returns. When no one pays attention to it, it will give off a sad chirp, and this makes everyone feel bad enough to go feed it carrots and scratch its head.

When the time is right, I would recommend looking for another. Every one of them needs a human pet.

I am sorry for your loss. I've had and raised many parrots in my time. I just have one question: Most avian vets know that any bird put under anesthesia is at a higher risk of death than most any other animal, so did your vet discuss with you the possibility of that ? I know that two birds I had needed to have their wings and beaks trimmed and were too rambunctious to clip awake, and the vet both times warned me of sedation for the birds. I declined and strongarmed the bastards into submission. I know it means nothing now, but I am sorry for your loss.

Peace

I could have used more time..

That's really young for an African Gray. Their average lifespan is 50-70 years.

Their long life is one reason I would never have a parrot. I like them, think they're beautiful animals, and find them to be highly intelligent, (although a bit too loud) but they can outlive us humans...and we need to make arrangements for them in our wills...

My grandma ended up adopting her friend's gray when she passed away. Paco is still only like 35, so he may end up being adopted again...

Sorry for your loss. :( Look into getting another, you can't replace a lost pet but you can at least get another companion to help fill the void.

Yep. We had a good friend who was a bird breeder. He tried to give us a couple of cockatoos over the years. Dammed things live 80 or more years...decided I didn't want to have a perpetual 5 year old child for the rest of my life. (that's about their intelligence level) SQUAWK! FEED ME NOW!! SQUAWK!! Ha!ha!ha!
They're great birds though...and I fully understand why people like them, they're just more than I want to take on.
