i feel #blessed to live up by the lake, where cicadas aren't a thing

and yet far enough away from the lake, so midges aren't a thing either

It's deafening around here. I like seeing them. They're neat critters, and their clumsiness has a certain charm.

You don't even have the regular annual broods?

NW Ohio seems to be devoid of brood X, but I think we have some other long-term broods that do like 5-7 year intervals? Or something like that. And definitely have the standard annual species that'll come later in summer, and for my experience that's also right by the lake, western shore in this case.

Hearing them switch to a terrified screeching as they try to avoid being lunch for some bird is something I find amusing lol especially when treated to the doppler effect as one survives long enough to dart this way and that

There are no cicadas here, but there is definitely lots of sex happening. NYC is open and people wanna meet people after the lockdown. It's a post Covid orgy

It's the same thing here. We do get cicadas every summer but they peak around mid July. So I guess we will find out if there are high numbers by then.

Summer isn't complete without their loud noise.

Probably different. We get annual cicadas also. They come out around August every year. These are special bugs that come out on a longer interval.

They are perio cicadas. The normal ones come out every year, these guys all come out together in 13 or 17 year intervals.

What's interesting is that nobody truly knows how they are able to wait 17 years and emerge all at once.
