i work on wall street doing compliance and make good money for a recent college grad (see $50,000)... but I hate living home and I've been thinking about getting away from NYC... like maybe a Miami (kinda expensive?), Phoenix, Tampa, San Diego...

what do you guys think... is it tough to get a good paying job in those places?

i checked a few websites and saw amazing (i mean amazing) apartments for like 600-800 a month, which with my salary right now I can afford (with all bills and food, etc, ive lived on my own before (see college)) while still saving a decent chuck of change, but how are the salary distributions in places like that. I want to go to a warm weather climate but be comfortable living by myself. I have a few buddies who feel the same way and one or two would move out with me....

any input?

Yeah, move to Texas. You can hang with me and the cows.

It'll be funny.

Having lived in San Francisco, Seattle, and finally semi-rural central Texas, I'll tell you that you're not really missing much by sticking to the big city and the bigger the better.

move to san diego, great city, on the expensive side though, not sure if there are good jobs in the field you work in SD

nyc is nice to visit, but if you have not strings....go for it...see the world in fact....move all over for a while even out of the country

you wont regret it

I hear there's lots of Gulpers in NYC.

And I hear Gulpers are Good.

Perhaps...just don't do anything to get tied down to those other places.

I've lived in los angeles, san francisco, boston, New york, and Philly. I would suggest picking up and moving somewhere else and try out the lifestyle. I feel it is one of the most amazine experience you will ever have. I wish I could live in another country , but that should wait until my MBA is done.

m4h, it appears your needle d**( has punctured yet another one of your inflatable girlfriends.

try to be more careful next time so that your lovely personality will just shine through your seemingly repugnant and worthless facade

And this, kids, is why you don't eat the Wall Candy. You end up like Mr. Chunkee here.

Given that you've got a solid job (from your second post) I'd say stay where you are for now until you can confidently move out on your own. You don't want to have to rely on "Joe Friend #1 and #2" coughing up their rent or having them skip out on cheques. 🙁

Being a lifelong new yorker about to move (to LI but moving nonetheless).

You will make more money in NYC. But not as much as youll have to pay extra to live in NYC. Its such a huge city with such a crazy amount of people that want to live there, that rents are ridiculous.

Youll prob keep more of your money in another city, but I suggest you find a job first, then move.

NYC is a sh*thole...move, you wont regret it.

Actually, come to think of it, an I-Banker friend of mine has been eyeing a move from San Francisco to Chicago for some time now. Different friends who've said they would help him land on his feet in Chicago have flaked so he's saving up until he has enough to get a decent place, eat, and live for as much time as it takes to find a job comparable to the one he has.

From all of his calculations, he is figuring he would need about $16,000.

I can get the details from him but I can't imagine your situation being much different.

My friend lives in New York too and he's starting to become a little hard. It's tough to make it in that city and it makes people hard. Get out of the city and see the country. Experience the world? Goto Europe or the west coast?

Think long and carefully about where you go to. Getting out of home is good but I would strongly advise if you pick a place that you take a vacation and spend a week there.

Don't do tourist stuff. Drive in rush hour traffic, talk to people and see how they are, try to do anything and everything you'd do in this city if you lived there. A warm climate doesn't necessarily mean a friendly climate.
