asd = laughing because it's assumed you are typing random stuff since you are laughing. you could have sdfhp;sjdfl as the equivalent.

lol stopped meaning laugh about 15 years ago. to me, it's more of an insult, "i deride what you typed".

on my shores, laughing is huehuahuahuehuahuehuahue (hue)
Myself, I take LOL seriously. That is to say, if I type in LOL that means I literally LOL. To do otherwise is phony. Now, if people are doing haha or hehe, so fucking what.

What exactly are emojis anyway and how do they differ from just regular smilies?

"Smilies" that you find here on this message board can be emoji or emoticons (or kaomoji). You can tell the difference by whether you can make them with ASCII, or if it they are made with :wordsinsidecolons:

Emoji are strictly images. They don't necessarily convey emotion (but they can), while emoticons always do. Emoticons convey the tone of the sentence they follow. Most emoji are just a word replacement. You can type a whole sentence with just emojis. Any "emoji" that you can make with ASCII are, by definition, emoticons, even when they are converted to a smilie.

Kaomoji are emoticons that you don't have to turn your head for. Like ಠ_ಠ or o_O (which, on this forum, the opposite makes a smilie o_O)

Oh so it's basically just a new term for something that's been around for a while? I keep seeing references to it and thought it was something new.

Let's not forget that the source for this info is FaceSpace - not exactly what you want to call the cutting edge of pop culture when the main reason you use it is to talk to gramma.
