I liked the Hackintosh so much ...

I enjoyed OSX so much during my Hackintosh experiment that when 10.5.7 upgraded hosed my install, I decided to get a Mac Pro rather than try to fix it.

Got a refurb 2008 Mac Pro from the Apple Store (8-core) and it's been awesome. Upgraded the RAM, got a new HD (raptor) and an new video card on the way as well. Just a marvelous machine from an engineering perspective and staggeringly quiet.

Now I'm selling my Shuttle boxes to help pay for it all 😉

Oh .. anyone wanna buy a couple of Shuttle boxes? 🙂

lol .. don't be jealous of my empty wallet 😉 I plan to get quite a few years out of this baby ... at least that's what I told my wife

Just out of curiosity, what are you going to do with it? I'd love a Mac Pro, but I think it'd be just a novelty for me. 8 cores, but not really good in the games dept. There's nothing I'd do on it that would justify it, except transcode videos to my ipod in crazy time.

What will I do with it? Hmmm ... very good question. Frankly I have no idea 🙂 I'll be hooking up a 2nd monitor and running XP in VMWare window for some school stuff (bastids insist on teaching courses that require Microsoft things), do some DreamWeaver work, and generally just enjoy it. I have no big plan that would justify this machine, heck I could probably do what I wanted to on a Mac Mini but I couldn't have added extra hard drives internally, nor could I have upgraded the graphics.

it should last a long time. My quad 2.66 with 6gigs of ram is chewing on my work daily and I expect it to last another 4 years or so 🙂

Yea, my C2D in my laptop still isn't showing it's age, and it's two years old. I'd say that you could easily get 2-4 years out of it.

the cool thing about macs is they don't break. The os doesn't break, the parts are higher quality and if a repair is needed its easy to get done. A girl I work with has a macbook pro that had that nvidia video card meltdown "feature" and she had the pro apple care plan and they had a new motherboard in her laptop in 4 hours!

Oh they break... definitely break. The OS gets problems, and they do put some subpar components in there on occasion. My MacBook has been great, but Tyranicus' MacBook Pro had almost every problem imaginable. Sure Apple would have fixed them, if he had remembered that his warranty lasted 12 months instead of 6, but that doesn't change the fact that the stuff broke.

It tends to be better made than the competitor, but trust me, the stuff breaks.

This is a great example of why Apple shouldn't shun the Hackintosh scene. Hackintosh users, are just more Mac users, and eventually Apple customers, one way or another. I know several Hackintosh users that never considered buying anything from Apple that have now bought everything from OSX and tons of Apple software, to Apple keyboards, remotes, and gizmos all the way up to MacBooks. And all because their Hacks introduced them to OSX.

This is why I got AppleCare with my new MacBook Pro. 😛

Yea. I am SO glad I bought AppleCare. I have had the following things break on me:

1.) LCD Screen (twice)
2.) SuperDrive
3.) Video Card

Macs aren't immune to breakage. Funny part is that my previous MacBookPro was amazing. I accidentally spilled Mt. Dew in the keyboard, so I turned it off, cleaned it out.. and it was working strong ever since... no issues. Sometimes you just get lemons, I guess. Regardless, I don't drink around my laptop anymore. 🙂

Excellent point.

i had fun with my hack while it lasted. But when i upgraded video card to 4850, now a 4870. I havent used it since. I have used the new drivers and they work but sleep doesnt work and that is a deal breaker. It was a good experience and i honestly like windows better. I am waiting for a proper driver for the 4870, with sleep. Then i will give it another go.

I could use mac for a laptop though.

Also mac uses the same parts as everyone else. And crashes and breaks just as much as everyone else. Though there cases do seem to be higher quality, but the insides are not.
