I like my windows 2000 w/o any SP on it. Some reasons with the sp's everything slows down badly and lags when i come outta games but i formated and hacnet upgraded to patch sp3 and its still fast after Games why?

I noticed the same thing with SP2-3.. SP1 didn't seem to cause any slow down on my machine.. I only do the SP1 now.

Hmmm...

Win 2K Pro with SP3 here. Running just fine. I didn't notice anything different with SP1 and SP3. 😵;

Agreed! I notice the very samething, I have more stabilility issue with SP.
Currently running 3 W2K machine without any SP on it now.

I'm having my finger cross on the SP4, hopefully this is the GOLDEN CURED
Win2000 is beginning to look a little old after 4 SP,
perhaps I should checkout the upcoming Window Serer 2003

All of you without service packs: please send me your IP address. I could use a few more remote boxes.

SP3 adds two new services. "Automatic Updates" and "Background Intelligent Transfer Service". The two services work together. I recommend disabling these services.

And as Smilin pointed out...services packs are must if your PC is on a network/internet. It is also a good idea to keep a "heads up" on any released post-sp hotfixes.

The Automatic Updates service downloads every latest hotfix, but I prefer to manually install updates. It is a waste to install updates that don't apply to your machine's environment (ex: a patch for reading DVD's, but your system doesn't even have a DVD drive). They may cause other problems. It is better to just wait for the next service pack.

SP3 made things a lot snappier on my computers, mostly because they fixed a little bug with hard drive DMA and ATA100 drives 🙂

I had the long shutdown problem too and read that one of the hotfixes causes this. It's # 32917. Uninstalling it fixed the problem. 🙂

SP2 caused serious issues to my machine. May have something to do with my VIA chipset 686B but nevertheless I wouldn't touch it. SP3 seems to be OK on my home machine but at work it's sux badly. It takes a long time to boot and to log off.
