With the rainy weather lately, it makes me glad I have one. I work for a company where most of the people here are well off. I see a lot of luxery brand vehicles parked in the parking lot. BMW, Lexus, Infinity, Cadillac, Lincoln, etc. Most of these people drive their cars every day regardless of the weather. Not me, I drive a loud, rusty, stinky (failed E-Check 3 times) 86 Trans AM on bad weather days. Some of the people I work with think I should just junk it. I think they just have a pompas attitude. The car has 180,000 miles on it and almost everything on it rattles, but I keep it running by fixing most of what goes bad myself. It's a car I can drive and not care if it gets dirty, chiped, or miles put on.

Who else has a beater car for the same purpose?

I'm the same way, so much less stress. You won't see me running to cry to ATOT if I get a door ding. I have a 1993 Nissan truck. I hit a tree with the bed of the truck a couple years ago and laughed about it.

Do you put more money into it to keep it going then the cost of payments on a new car? If not, then your golden.

Heh...I drive a '95 Nissan Pathfinder with 280,000 miles and a cracked windshield. I'm not putting a dime into it anymore except for general maintenance and I'm going to drive it until it can't be driven no more. :D I loathe/despise/detest/hate car payments now and avoid them at all cost.

I wish I had a beater, like an old Crown Vic or Caprice, to smash into assholes cars and not care about it. Like this prick who didn't merge in front of behind me when a highway entrance ramp goes from 2 lanes to 1, he decided to just merge into the side of me and force me out of the way in his brand new Lexus. If I'd had a beater right then I would just smashed into his rear quarter panel and sent him spinning off the road while I drove my beater away and his expensive ass Lexus was fvcked

Very likely, there comes a point in every car owners life where he or she has to make the choice of "Should I fix this heap of junk again or buy a newer car and possibly worry less?"
The OP has chosen to fix the heap, and its his choice.

..and you can park it anywhere and not worry about it. Have you ever noticed how nobody wants to park near an eye sore beater?? I use to have a 1963 Chevy pickup wit a 6 cyl and 3 speed manual. Looked like hell..doors bashed in and you could hear it comming 2 blocks away. But it ran good and got me around. Almost flipped the fuggen thing going around a turn..had terrible center of gravity and coil spring susp front/rear. Those were the days...

Last week I saw a nice new BMW M3 parked outside in the rain. So of course I parked right up next to it with the stinky old TA. I'm sure the tweed jacket wearing yuppie got his monical in a bunch when he came outside to his car.

Beaters FTW! I drove the '86 626 from 90 to 2005, and sold it to the neighbor. He still drives it every day. No matter how you drove it in town, it got 30 MPG day in day out for 350,000 miles.
If you took it on the highway and drove 65, it would get 33.

Only if you crash.

When I was driving a beater, I was always a lot more careful in inclement weather..which can't be said for a lot of new car drivers.

You see a lot of "luxery" brands? I guess that's why you drive a beater.

Millions of people drove billions of miles in cars that didn't have modern safety equipment, the vast majority of them got through it just fine.

Just because there is something better available does not mean the old stuff is suddenly a death trap.

So is your whole purpose of having a beater to piss others off? Because that would definitely qualify as being an asshole.

BTW, cracked windshields are illegal.
