so my friend from another country is filing an application, and I let her use my credit card number to pay for the applicaton fee....

so I let her my number, and also let her just sign it...no problem right?

If you have to question if it's the right/best thing to do, it's probably not worth taking the risk.

They shouldn't take it since your signature needs to be on the verification slip.

You're also a moron for letting somebody use your CC to pay for something AND then considering them signing it to be ok.

p.s. i need your CC # to pay for something too, I promise I'll sign my name, hence accepting responsibility for paying it. just send it over and I promise I'll only pay for that one thing.

i've done it before, never had a problem with it. i let my brother use my credit card a couple times, i told him to sign his own name though, this way he's not forging my signature, and if the credit card company ever calls me about it, i'll just confirm the charges.

Your friend just committed fraud whether you allow for it or not I would believe. And if something does turn serious I don't beleive your bank or visa card company would be on your side.

If you want her to be able to make the purchase, why not provide him/her with the cash instead?

From the 1998 Federal Sentencing Guideline Manual:

5) If (A) the defendant relocated, or participated in relocating, a fraudulent scheme to another jurisdiction to evade law enforcement or regulatory officials; (B) a substantial part of a fraudulent scheme was committed from outside the United States; or (C) the offense otherwise involved sophisticated means, increase by 2 levels. If the resulting offense level is less than level 12, increase to level 12.

If you use a program like Discover Desktop you could at least generate a one time use # just in case.

Michael Bolton: If we get caught, we're not going to white-collar resort prison. No, no, no. We're going to federal POUND ME IN THE A$$ prison.
Samir: I don't want to go to ANY prison!

I'm not at all concerned about her using the number to buy stuff w/out my consent....all i'm concerned is that if she uses my card, and signs it, will we get in trouble in any way even though I let her....I guess if it is forgery for her to use my name, can she sign her name and I can confirm the charges if they call?

no. you will not get in trouble.
ithere are two situations (i can think of) where there would be an issue. one is if they checked the signature against yours (which i dont imagine they would do, since there are no problems). two is if you called your credit card company and informed them that your card was used without your knowledge/permission, which i dont think you will be doing - in that case they would compare your signature and probably find out its forged.

yes, if she signs her own name, you can just confirm charges later.

I sign my name on credit card slips at dinners that my GF pays for all the time.

BTW you're fine.

It'll be more of her getting in trouble for fraud and your credit card company might cross-check the signature and put a red flag on her purchase. It might also be bad if her name is "Jane" and your name is "John" and then signs the card :D

Couldn't she have just given cash for the fee? Or couldn't you just have signed for her (for payment purposes)? My sister has paid for one of my race applications using her credit card -- all the info on it was mine, except for her credit card number. It didn't require a signature of the card holder, though -- just the number and expiry date.

I occasionally see unsigned credit card slips at work...I've never had to make a deposit adjustment for them, though.

To answer your query, I will require power of attorney. Am certain you won't mind if I sign the paperwork on your behalf.
