Are you taking any electrical appliances (like an electric razor) that would require a power conversion? Just a thought, I haven't been to Europe yet. Maybe next year.

Actually for the most part, the water in Europe is pretty safe to drink. Just make sure that the fountain isn't labeled as not safe to drink. What was most disconcerting was getting used to the idea of drinking from the hundreds of natural fountains that can be found throughout Rome. For the most part, its safe to drink and suprisingly cold.

Where are you flying from and going to? If you're doing something like Washington to London it's not too bad of a plane ride. If you're doing Chicago (or further west) to Frankfurt you're in for one hell of a long flight.

I higly recommend POMPLONA SPAIN. If you can try to go during the "Running of the Bulls" festival (July 6 - July 14)..

Then you have the "La Tomatina" tomato-throwing festival in Valencia in August (CHECK UP THE DATE) :D

Yeah, keep your wallet in a very secure place. My friend just got back and has his wallet stolen within 15 minutes of hitting Paris.

Skip the McDs, Burger Kings, and the rest that you have at home. Go get some local cuisine!

I just got back from 2 weeks in England.
The dollar is sucking big time. Take lots of them or resolve to eat cheaply.
Have fun.

<Going back to Sweden, Holland and Belgium in 8 days.

I prefer using ATMs, mine doesn't charge a transaction fee and European banks don't either, plus you get a great exchange rate.

Here's my advice:

Check alcohol content of beer before drinking. I had one bottle that was 15% in Russia, I was like WTF? when I realized how drunk I was.

Belgium has something like 400+ kinds of beer. Have fun...

McDonalds are good cause they have good clean and free (the ones I went to were) bathrooms. I can't believe I paid 23cents to use a portapotty...

Take medication, especially diarreha and advil (train sleepers do wierd things to my neck)

Take advantage of VAT, not sure of how it works when you travel through different EU countries. It may only be good for the EU country you depart from and they also have a 3month expiration limit. And you have to spend somewhere around $50us+ before they will issue one.

Not going to Copenhagen?:p

Well, better ignore the above sentence. Off course the menu tells u "service included" but really, you do tip. Not as outrageous as in the states, but here in germany I tip usually somewehere between 2 and 10% 10% being on the very high side (i.e. at small things (coffee: ?1.80->2.00)

Also, someone suggested travellers checks: I do not recommend them at all, sure they are replaced, but a pain in the ass to exchange to money (had that experience with AMEX travellers checks) Also they wanted to charge quite a bit to accept them. I rather recommend a CC (VISA, MASTER) but do not get cash at an ATM with them. If u have a bank card at home that offers "Maestro" service, use that - way cheaper, CCs charge at least ?10 for getting cash....

Oh about Fast food: McD is utter crap tastes like horrible flabby and greasy. The Hamburger Royale is a Quarterpounder at McD. The Whopper has always been a whopper - and is the only eadable burger. (there is only McD and Burger King - in .de anyway) If u want good fast food (that doesnt make u sick and actually lasts longer than 1/2 hr) Go to a turkish Kebap shop. Döner Kebap is what u should try - trust me it's good - cheaper than those franchises too). Lahmacun (turk. Pizza) and Börek are also recommendable. Well what I am saying is rather go to them immigrants food places if u want to eat cheap. U can have all the Fast food at home why go to Europe for that. Off course best is to go to a real restaurant (far more abundant than Fast food anyway) and have real (slow) food - costs more though
(generally)

Someone mentioned something about water: well tap water is safe to drink (.de, .se....) dunno about the southern countries. Actually tap water is way way safer than non carbonated bottled water. There have been studies and often germs where found in non-carbonated bottled water - regulations are way higher on tap water (.de).

i brought a pair of khakis that had an inner pocket when i went to europe. basically, it was a normal front pocket, but had a zippered inner pocket for wallets etc that is really hard for thieves to get into. I didn't have any money stolen on my trip and I went to france, switzerland, austria, and italy.

The only place where you may have some fun is in a Apfelwein pub in Sachsenhausen. After that make track to Munich asap!! Hofbrauhaus, Englischer Garten, the general atmosphere of Munich is 1000fold better than here in Frankfurt.

PM me if you have any detailed questions about the Rhein Main area.

BS, there is lots of Party in Frankfurt - but hey I dont like Frankfurt either it's so goddamn ugly ( well like almost all bigger cities in Germany - the war) (live in Darmstadt...)

I thaught Munich was boring: Police everywhere, dont look like a foreigner u might not like Munich then, Yuppyish, no good parties, and ppl seemed fvcking "spießig" dunno the english term - but I was there only 3 days.

You should visit Hamburg that is beautiful and cool city. Or even better : Berlin that is where the party is going, and life is much more relaxed than in Munich or so

BTW if u are going only for 3 weeks maybe u should delete all but one maybe two of the countries on your list. Otherwise u wont experience anything, could as well watch "Europe - the Travelshow" on TV

Another thing: what is this obsession u guys have about wallets being stolen? I never ever got a wallet stolen, well except that one time when I placed it on the roof of my car, forgot about it and drove off. That one didnt come back to me... It is always good to take extra precautions, but ppl dont make this poor guy paranoid. Just take the precautions u would take in any city...

As much as you can :D

I would say minimum $40 a day in most cities, dorms in hostels usually come out to be about $10-25 a night and you need food and what not. I wasn't traveling all the time and I was stuck in Denmark most of the time where it is uber expensive so I traveled well and would spend about $250 per weekend, this is with staying in doubles in hostels and eating 3 course meals at fairly good places, going to museums (way too many in Berlin), buying crap (I came home with so much stuff from Poland...), etc. I knew I was going to be broke when I went home so I might as go home as a well fed broke.

Maybe because it happens.

At least happened to me (not one of those I knew somebody who had a friend's sister, best friend's brother) in Rome near the collisium. Got cornered by some gypsy chicks doing that baby thing.
I got my wallet back, so I suppose I was lucky.

And, talking to a few other people who have traveled to Europe, Italy specifically, they have known others or themselves that get 'the brush' by some gypsies.

Italy seems to be the worse, and Paris was not too great. But I felt pretty safe in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

Also I would suggest asking some locals off the street where to eat and/or shop. A lot of hotel folks get spiffs by the vendors and ditto that with tour guides.

Again, I sure as heck would not mess with traveler's checks. Just use your debit and/or credit card. It is not like you are traveling to some third world nation.

Go to Frankfurt, rent a sweet car and take the autobahn down to munich

Thats what i did when i was young, not the car part. The people i stayed with did that.
Went all over south germany and headed over to austria as well.

They have some interesting garage mechanisms over there.
Single garage with a collapsing floor where one car is stored below.

D00d, you gotta take the train from Munich to Garmisch and go hike through the gorge that's down the trail by the olympic ski stadium in Garmish. It's incredible!

Ride the tube in London! If you're into airplanes take the tube to the RAF museum near the Colindale stop on the Northern Line. PM me for better directions.

Oh man all these suggestions!

Okay, so it seems that Zurich is the place to go, eh? Well I will definately bring that place up.

Also, you guys gotta understand that as kids we have pretty short attention spans, so travelling from city to city is doubtfully gonna be a problem for us ;)

And so I shouldn't take traveller's checks? I heard that you can just exchange them in a train station for cash and not have too high of a fee... is that correct?

And how do I know if an ATM has a fee attached to it?
