I leave for Italy on January 4th

I'm studying abroad in Italy during the month of January beginning on the 4th.

I'm wondering what exactly I can pack in my carry on bag. I think I understand the "3-1-1" rule, but I want to make sure.

Also, and more importantly, can I pack anything I want in my checked luggage? If the answer to this is yes, then I'll just do this to avoid any hassles.

just put everything but medicine/laptop/electronics/ipod in your checked bag and save yourself the hassle
 
I always carry my laptop with me as something to at least play with; and I'd rather not have it floating without knowing where it is. I've never found it troublesome to get through security with it, and it takes just as much time to take your shoes off or get the crap out of your pockets.
