I know nothing and need help with this networking problem ASAP

When it comes to networking I dont have a clue as to what I am doing. I am curently trying to connect 2 computers, which worked, however one of them is connected to the internet via Yahoo DSL and uses there connection program. I am trying to set it up so I either A.) Can connect to the internet and log in via some other means, or B. What I am told is the easier route, is to connect through the internet using the computer that is already connected. However I am not sure if I am doing this correctly, can someone give me a step by step guide. As I get some sort of IP address error.

English please? So what you're trying to do sounds like share your internet connection on the computer not hooked up directly to the Yahoo DSL? How are you hooking the computers together? Hub/Switch? Router? (I'm guessing not) Patch cable between 2 ethernet cards? The easiest way to do this without purchasing more hardware is just to use Windows Internet Connection Sharing. (Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs -> Windows Components)

Eh sorry about that was trying to do too many things at once. Yeah I left out some important details out. I have the DSL modem connected to a hub. The hub then connects two seperate computers via an ethernet cord. Now it seems I can get one computer to login to the PPoE but then the other cannot log in and I am trying to share a connection. Both computers are using XP. I am trying to fiddle with some settings but no luck yet.

You can only connect one computer at once. Put two nic cards in one computer, plug the modem into one, the other into the hub. Or better yet just go buy a cheap router.

PPPOE software is a "Dial in Type"; it initiates and keeps the connection alive while you are surfing.

The implementation of the PPOOE software used by most ISPs is unfortunately quirky, and with ICS it is VERY Quirky.

I would suggest to any one with PPPOE DSL to buy a Cable/DSL Router even if they don't have a Network. You can find Cable/DSL Routers on sale and rebates for $10-$20.

For the price you get Hardware Firewall, and Hardware PPPOE "keep alive", DHCP server, 4 ports Switch, and more

Unfortunately most DSL ISPs do not give you an ID and password over the phone; they want you to get it online.

In such a case use single computer connected to the DSL Modem. Install their PPPOE software and establish an account. In the process you will be given ID and Password (write them down)

Once you have an account connect your Cable/DSL Router to the DSL Modem, and plug your computers to the Router.

Log onto the Router's configuration Menus. In the PPPOE menu type Username and Password, make sure that the PPPOE option is checked. Set the Router to obtain IP automatically.

As long as you don't switch off the DSL Modem, and the Router you are connected "forever" (the computer can be switched off). If you switch the Modem, and the Router off, when you switch them on again, it will take about 30-50 seconds to the Modem to obtain connection, and the Router will automatically connect to the DSL ISP.

You can uninstall WINPOET, and or whatever software they dished you.
Or if you want you can leave them installed; (The software PPPOE appears as another Dialup connection, in the Browser). Just make sure that the Internet Browser is set to use LAN, otherwise it will keep using the PPPOE.

The Router's PPPOE capacity is independent from the Computer, and it keeps the connection alive.

In case of PPPOE DSL Working through the Router should yield faster (5%-10%), and smoother Internet connection.

Run the program, it will show the current settings of TCP/IP parameters. Write them down.

You can change any variable that you want, click Apply, and reboot the computer, if no good; you can always change to your original values.

Time Stamping - No

Selective Acks - Yes

Path MTU Discovery - Yes.

Black Hole - NO

Max Duplicate - 2

TTL - 64

aolsuxs, your best bet would be to buy a NAT router, rather than putting a 2nd network card into one of your computers to make the software Internet Connection Sharing(ICS) work. It's easlier to setup plus the router can protect your computers from Internet security risks. Also, if you use ICS, the computer with the 2 networks cards must be on for the other computer to have Internet access.

Yeah, make your life easy! Get a router that supports dhcp too, your life would be much much easier.

Yes I was trying to get the ICS to work but it said something about not being connected to the network. So as of now only one computer can connect at a time. Is there a way to do this with the hub and w/o the router?

Somehow I got both my computers running to dial up using the PPPoe however other times when I use both to dial one will connect and the other will say there is no dial tone. I can get the internet sharing to work however usually the other end is extremly slow. Is there anyway to get each seperate computer to dial in on the PPPoe?

Get a router and you will have less headaches. They are cheap over in hotdeals.
