I know nothing about Rock and Roll

I, like you, have largely listened to hip-hop for most of my formative years and just recently (within two years) started to care about rock and roll. Thought I might chime in with some suggestions. I know I still have a lot to explore, but 50 years is a lot of music to digest 😛. Its definitely an eclectic mix of classics and more recent stuff but it sounds like we have similar tastes in other genres.

Beatles
Disturbed
The Doors
Jimi Hendreix
Lynyrd Skynyrd
NIRVANA
The Offspring
Pearl Jam
Pink Floyd
Staind
Velvet Revolver

Not rock and roll, but worth a listen if you haven't heard before -- The Roots. The mix of the live band with the rapping is worth a listen for sure.

The first 2 things to understand about rock n' roll is that (1) all rock comes from the blues, and (2) rock n' roll is a euphemism for sex.

For example, our Saudi friend mentioned that his first experience with rock and roll was GNR's November Rain, which in its coda has the following lyrics, which represent almost entirely the rock and roll spirit/mentality/anthem:

Don't ya think that you need somebody
Don't ya think that you need someone
Everybody needs somebody
You're not the only one

Sweet, nice to know someone else is coming from the same angle as me. I appreciate the suggestions, I have a lot of listening to do. I have been really meaning to check out The Roots for a while now, thanks for the reminder.

My Jimi Hendrix/Carlos Santana/other bands pandora station has been working overtime. I'm discovering so much new music. Sweeeeeet.

Metal is the most musically creative genre of Rock and Roll. I suggest you listen to some good metal bands.
