My current system is starting to show it's age and I'm going to refresh the system by dumping another GPU in there.

I'm currently running a GTX670 2GB card with a fairly hefty overclock. I'm at 1080p but struggling to maintain the sweet 60 on newer games.

I have plenty of cash to spend, so do I get it now or buy the same tier card next year? What sort of improvement are we expecting? Full DX12, HBM?

Thanks :).

If money isn't an object get a 980ti and sell it next year before pascal comes out.

Spend 650-700 for 980ti
Sell for 550
Use the 550 to purchase next year's nodeshrink card which will be far faster than the 980ti (either vendor)

Profit?

If you're content now, waiting is almost always the best option; it's not like technology is going to get more expensive for worse performance a year from now. But I just upgraded to a 980 ti myself, and it's pretty awesome being able to max everything with breathing room at 1080P. And like tential said, you can always sell it next year and put the money towards an upgrade (although I think expecting to fetch $550 for it in a year is a bit much).

As well as HBM there's also a big die shrink coming - they skipped 20nm so its 28 all the way down to 16.

All in, the next gen stuff should be really quite a big jump. Timing obviously much less certain.

I'm in a similar boat right now actually. I have 2 GTX670s in SLI that I want to get rid of. I've got a wedding coming up though, so unless I get a nice bonus or something, I might just wait.

I've been mulling over a Fury or overclocked GTX980 actually. It seems that without VCore overclocking for the Fury cards, they trade blows pretty well. Keep that long enough for Pascal to be fully released (and in stock!) and then move to that. My problem is that I also want to upgrade to 1440p and I know my 670s will struggle there. They ALSO struggle with Star Citizen where my friend's 960 was doing better...

I'm with Solmiester here, get a 970 and wait for Pascal. It's roughly twice as fast as the 670 and, at 1080p, you could use that card for 2 years or more. More than enough time for Pascal to launch and the lineup to fill out.

Is the 970 really viable at 1440p? I seem to remember reading that quite a few games pushed the 3.5GB limit at 1440p?

I'm hoping to push to 4k next year. Waiting if probably for the best.

What I've suggested allows you to push 4K. The 980Ti will push 4K (Maybe not Ultra everything though but 4K!) and you can use DSR instead if you want to use your current screen.
Then you just sell and upgrade. The 980Ti isn't losing a lot of value. Next year's midrange card should be faster than a 980Ti.

You can't lose.

1440p wasnt in the discussion from what I read, 4k maybe but knows he will need Pascal.

The OP said he was at 1080p.

The 970 is really overkill, but a 960 wouldn't be enough of a jump in performance to justify itself vs a 670 imo.

I've seen you post this more than once. Your statement 'roughly' is off by almost 40%.

OP, I would sell the 670 and get a used 290/290X or a 970 to hold you off until 16nm HBM2 GPUs. No single GPU is good enough for 4K gaming this generation so even if you get a Titan X, it's not good enough.

What? Given how unoptimized modern AAA PC games are, 970/290/290X/390 level card is a good option for 1080P, not overkill.

RussianSensation - would you now say that for someone not wanting to spend the price of a 980ti, that a used 980 @ 1440p is viable at <$300? And then wait for Pascal next year?
