I know... it's been asked a million times... Need a web host

I'm currently looking at a yearly small business account from hostpc, and wanted to ask a few questions about if this was a good hosting company/plan for my purposes. I'm primarily going to be hosting a couple domains and several copies of Gallery for hosting family pictures and such. I'm on a (thanks to AT) free 3 year 1And1 account right now.

I just got a Canon Digital Rebel XT camera and have found that using the high/fine quality jpegs from this camera quickly put me over the 500 mb storage limit on my 1and1 account. I've liked 1and1 and for the money (free) it can't be beat imho.

Onto my questions (Finnaly)

1.) Do I need this much space (1600MB) and is $60 a year pretty good for a package like this. I've read rave reviews of the DA control panel, and hostpc appears to get Rossman's seal of approval... Is this the route you would go? Will I be satisfied after using 1and1? Happier?

2.) Also, on a side note. I've been posting pictures in full size (8MP) from the rebel in my Gallery, and was wondering if that's a bit excessive. What size do you use for your full size pics?

3.) Lastly, Any recommendations on something better than Gallery? Do you recommend a specific version of Gallery? I'm running the beta version of 2.x and have a 1.44 version as well. Is 1.5 much better than 1.4 or should I simply keep on with the 2.x line?

Thanks! -Tal

as far as the pictures go...

post them in the area of 800x600.

If someone wants the original larger version, you can have a link to request it through e-mail.

No reason for you to waste webspace and bandwidth costs on huge images when the AVERAGE person just wants a looksee... not the size big enough for print.

dude do this ... sign up at www.dreamhost.com

you get 5Gb storage and 120gb xfer/mo. and the cost? $9.24 for the whole YEAR. Yes, YEAR. when i got back from aruba i saw this deal in hotdeals and i wanted to put my pics online for others to view and came accross. its a 7 year anniversary deal. PM me for more details as i don't think promo codes are allowed in here. its non-referral and all, just a promo code that allows you to make the payment cost $.77 for 12 months.

this also included free domain registry. check out my sig for the hosting. the speeds aren't the BEST, but they are definitely good.

you can check out my galleries on there too and see if you like the format. i used photoshop gallery creation, after editing the template to meet my looks and stuff. check out my site in sig for the example.

Anyone else comment on Dreamhost? I've heard a few people recommend them, but in webhostingtalk, I've also heard some complaints.

And purbeast0... I think the real question ATOT has (ok, just me maybe) after looking at your Aruba pictures.... is.... Where are the OTHER pictures from your Aruba trip? :p

A. Hostpc is pretty good. . .
B. You've got plenty of space once you reduce the picture sizes. (I don't think HostPC has Rossman's Seal) but he does like them and has a site with them last I heard.
C. Yes your pictures are will be very large at 8mp, you can drop those down using jpg compression and resizeing them to eve 1084x720 or 600x600 most web pictures are shown with a thumbnail then a link to a better quality larger picture. So unless you have someone that is doing a printing or editing job for you there isn't any reason to upload them at that high of resolution.
D. Sorry I tested Gallery, but don't know the answer to that question. . .

Good Luck,
C

DreamHost is cheap for the first year, all I can say is they are cheap. I have rarely used my account but I'm not aware of any downtime.

2.4GB/120GB for $9.24/yr including a free domain is very cheap.

However I'm not sure what the cost is after the 1 year is up? That's why I used my one time use cc (which I put a limit of $10). So after the first year they can't charge me a penny :)

I use Telnap, which has been great, and currently they're running a nice promotion:
20% off all monthly prices and 40% off if you prepay for a year, plus you get double the space and bandwidth

Its run by DeviousTrap.

Correct.

Although I was happy with HostPC.com I recently switched to 10for10.com which is great :)

Rossman or someone.... Can I do the one time use with an Amex Blue card? If so, where do I go to do this?

Amex discontinued Private Payments (one time use cc's) about 1.5 years ago.

However MBNA and CitiBank cc's still offer this very useful feature.

2) an image as large as 1200x1200 can be as small as 150kb. The XP Powertoy Image Resizer has been great for me. Hardly notice the difference on the web.

Yaaaarrr,

resize them puppies in the GIMP or image editing program of your choosing, generally I just save as JPEG's on a fairly high quality level, I suppose if someone wanted the raw picture data they could email me for them.

I have HostPC, they have been faaaaantastic, their support is good and FAST.

I've only used Coppermine, guess if you like the way Gallery looks and are familiar with it, go for it.

Um, resize the pics. Seriously. I know I said it already, but it bears repeating. Waste of space online, and waste of time and upstream bandwidth uploading them.

Oh as far as size of the pics I post, mine are usually in 1-2 megapixel range and then resaved and compressed, sometimes cropped as well. They still look great on the web.

I have the 3200MB/40GB plan from HostPC, I upped to that from my 100MB/1GB Fall Frenzy deal.

I've been moved to a newer, faster server, and their support response is incredible, whether through the forums, helpdesk, or IRC. They also seem to be pretty well grounded and not likely to drop off the face of the earth (Ripplehost).

DirectAdmin is pretty sweet also. They just added Drag & Drop Site Creator to the list of extras available ($10 one time fee) it seems pretty nice if you're a HTML-noob like me.

Good Luck!

I don't think 99% of people ever make it past the 640x480 intermediate size on my galleries. I have it set to resize the full-size image to 1024x768.

Gallery will do it for you before it uploads them if you use the Gallery Remote program.

mmmm, never knew that (like I said I never used Gallery) but I'm about to redo my site anyway, I might have to consider Gallery in that case.

Is the Gallery Remote program easy to use? I like things that a) my wife, and b) the rest of our familes, can figure out.

The new Gallery will let you specify defaults and use them when uploading through the web interface and/or JAVA interface as well. So it's not just the Gallery Remote anymore. I really like the new Gallery so far.

THANKS! I appreciate all the input folks. I'm now trying to figure out a good size to go for on my pics. I had my dad look at the site and he didn't even know you could go bigger than the initial pic after the thumbnail....

I went with Dreamhost for now and got in on the 777 deal. Worth $10 to try them out. Interface leaves a little to be desired and I'm pretty sure I wouldn't pay $119 a year (full price) to use that interface when I can pay less to get a DA or Cpanel interface. Thanks again!

i did the dreamhost deal and i've had no problems with it. the user panel is a pain in the balls, but it's not unbearable
