My grandfather is still using an eMachines "eTower 366" (366MHz Celly) that I recommended he purchase (new) in like 1999. Even back then the only thing that people were saying bad about eMachines was that the power supply was bad or would go bad. But it worked fine for him.

My friend would have gotten it today, if it were in stock. We looked at Fry's, BestBuy and Compusa, but really couldn't find a bundle that was right. So he wanted to just get the computer, then he would have been able to get the LCD, wireless keyboard/mouse and a printer later. Instead he just got exactly what he wanted at Dell.

My AMD K62 Emachines lasted quite a few years before I sold it, iirc I think I paid $300 for it so it worked out pretty well. I would actually choose them over say Compaq.

They had a lot of non-functioning winmodems back in the day.

Dell has motherboards made for them by intel

Emachines uses ecs motherboards, nothing custom, same ones you and I can buy

I spent the better part of a half hour searching for availability in-store and could find none. I have no idea if the item ever actually sold for that price, or, if so, how many were actually stocked (offered/available) at one time, at that price.

COMPUSA seems to have several items listed at their website that look like a steal and look available, when they're actually not. I have no idea why they simply can't note an item is out of stock when it's out of stock. Not sure if this is a tactic (meant to generate a false sense of competitive pricing or perhaps traffic through the comparative sites, although I did not see this particular item listed on these), or if they simply can't get it together logistically or don't care to.

Items listed at BS (whether old, one-time only, or fantasy) prices but not actually available at COMPUSA = waste my time.

Its called bait and switch and looks like they are getting away with it :(

Still have a running-just-fine eMachine C-466. I'd buy one except there are none in stock within 221 miles of me. On the other hand the nearest store is 174 miles away;)

My father bought an E-Machines system back in 2000 (Celeron 466 I think) and had to mail it back to the company because it had a bad motherboard. Even though it was purchased locally at a Circuit City, CC wouldn't take it back or exchange it. (What good is buying bricks and mortar if they won't provide that kind of customer service and you have to pay to ship a defective product back anyway ???) E-Machines did fix it and it's been fine ever since.

Has anyone actually seen this computer in stock anywhere? It's almost as though CompUSA had a total of two or three in stock across the country and figured they'd advertise it so that people would think they had good deals now and then and would stop calling them CompUSSR.

They're pulling the same crap as in January, when they advertised Antec SuperLAN Boy cases for $40AR and non had them in stock (computer said they did, but they didn't).

CompUSA is under FTC scrutiny for rebate fraud. Maybe they need to be checked on for advertising non-existant items as well.

CompUSA fingered by feds over rebates
(Yeah, I know, Inquirer)
