To be honest, when i worked at CC we got a hell of alot more HP's and Compaq's back from having problems right out of the box than emachines.... Yes, we did indeed sell more of those, but the percentage of return was significantly higher...

Looks like a good deal...

My friend's 900 celeron still working perfectly with XP Pro. But since emachine has a new owner recently, hopefully they will make it even better. The 900 celeron emachine was build by Korean company.

Emachines have gotten MUCH better over the last year or 2. I, too, have in the (fairly) recent past had to deal with constantly breaking low-end HP's, Compaqs, Dells and Gateways more than Emachines. "Walmart special" HP's, and Gateways that had been previously "repaired" by the Gateway County stores were particularly bad, as either the GCS folks were inept or deliberately sabotaging people.

I agree. Check PC World or PC Mag surveys to see for yourself. Our PIII 600MHz "eMonster" from 2000 was still going strong when we sold it last year.

I was thinking of getting a Foxconn barebones setup (case, mobo, power supply) from NewEgg with an XP 2500+ for $202 shipped. For $100, I could tack in that HDD and another 512 MB RAM. Hmm... very tempting.

edit: %@$#! First I miss out on the notebook, and now this is pick-up only and every CompUSA within 100 miles is out-of-stock. This is definitely not my weekend for deals.

I love eMachines computers. They have been the most reliable for me throughout my computer buying experience. I have the PIII 500mhz "eMonster", which was my 3rd computer purchase. I could always depend on it whenever I needed. Never a problem. I still have it, but I don't use it now. But I know if I were to turn it on now, it would work like a charm. I eventually started putting together systems for myself after my "eMonster" and would use the "eMonster" parts for diagnostic purposes. But if I were to recommend a system to someone, it would be eMachines.

E-machines had a bad rep when they first started out, and I for one have avoided them. But, (as stated by the posters above) here's an interesting one:

December 2004 PCWorld reader survey lists them as best in reliability for both desktops and notebooks. (Hmmm?)

Desktop Survey

Notebook Survey

Who'd a thunk it?

EDIT: Looks like this is in store only and it also looks like there aren't many (if any) stores that actually have this item. Seems like COMPUSA has a bunch of interesting "deals" that seemingly aren't really available. Am I mistaken?

I have one of the old original E-Machines - a 600mhz celeron system that has been running as my web server, among other things, non stop for the past 5 years and it is still going strong. This thing has been on all but perhaps 1 hour the past 4 or so years, runs a defrag every day, runs 2 backups every day, and holds a good 200GB worth of data. It is a different company now, but they sure gave me a great PC back then..

I too am surprised at how mcuh better emachines has gotten. I have the m6805 latptop and it is great. the only complaint one might have with them is lack of tech support(they have it but it's not a toll free number)
for 300 bucks this is a great deal. I'm actually thing about getting one and using it for F@H.

I realize this isn't a COMPUSA "deal" per se, however it is an item listed, seemingly as active, in-store, at an extremely attractive price. A week ago I noticed a camera listed at COMPUSA for $400 that was $600 on many of the comparative price sites. I spent the better part of a half hour searching for availability in-store and could find none. I have no idea if the item ever actually sold for that price, or, if so, how many were actually stocked (offered/available) at one time, at that price.

COMPUSA seems to have several items listed at their website that look like a steal and look available, when they're actually not. I have no idea why they simply can't note an item is out of stock when it's out of stock. Not sure if this is a tactic (meant to generate a false sense of competitive pricing or perhaps traffic through the comparative sites, although I did not see this particular item listed on these), or if they simply can't get it together logistically or don't care to.

Items listed at BS (whether old, one-time only, or fantasy) prices but not actually available at COMPUSA = waste my time.

Yeah.. that's a really good deal but it is OOS everywhere. None around my area - hit up some major zip codes (NY, LA, Chicago) and there are none there either so I'm pretty sure it's just BS as mentioned above

Foxconn :Q , I got couple MoBo from PC club a years ago, one of them DOA, another one dead after a month, first one got exchange and the second one need to wait for few weeks for repair, after a year, one of them dead and no more warranty. Never OC and no abuse, Foxconn said they made MoBo for Intel and some lowend asus, if this is true, the "foxconn" brand name must made by another cheap OEM manufacture.

emac's are definately not worse in quality than a hp/compaq or dell. ppl just hear emac and think crap. i'd take a emac over a dell if the specs were the same.

EMachine's are acutally pretty solid products. Truthfully, if you look at the guts of the PC, Dell pretty much uses the same drives and motherboards.
