Maybe he purchased a used suburban. Either way I suggest you wait a few months till you have a bit more money and buy a card that will last you a few years. The 9600 is a poor choice at this point.

the point is he wants vivo and doesn't want to spend much more the $200... a vanilla 6800 doesn't fit either of his criteria. the 9800p is his best option, and i'm quite certain it will run d3/hl2 just fine, even if you're limited to resolutions such as 1024, just as i'm sure nv35 will run it fine; id isn't going to make a game that can't be run on 95% of the hardware out there.

In his original post he said "(Should I start a poll for 9800 pro or 6800NU?)".

I don't know. I can't see recommending R300s to guys who have money for new furniture and Suburbans.
He has good money, I don't see why he'd want to cheat himself with a 2 year old core design when it sounds like he doesn't buy cards that often. Is that 9700P GG recommended going to be a good card in 2006? Methinks not.
You can be pennywise and pound foolish, I just don't think D3 or HL2 is going to be a good enough experience on a 9700Pro.

No one in the whole world Railer.

Not me or most other sane people.
Last I checked, the video card you buy isn't a criteria for sanity. You do realize you've just called many many people on boards like this "insane"? You should think more about why you judge people based on how they spend money they've earned, and less about how other people spend their money.

They poor guy already came out and admitted that he was whipped....why bother suggesting unattainable cards?
If he has a job, or earns his keep by watching their kids and doing the housework part of the relationship, I say "whipped" doesn't come in to play. Lincoln freed the slaves.

What you SHOULD do...is find a used/refurb 9700 non pro or pro for between $115 and $140, then get yourself a TV Wonder, Leadtek Winfast, or other TV/vid capture card for somewhere around $40. Together they're the same price as that 9600, but clobbers it in terms of flexibility and performance.
Clobbering a 9600 Pro is pretty easy, but are you going to buy him a new card when D3 plays like a$$ on his 9700?

Oh, and in case anybody lips off about the 6800 being "x% faster" than the 9700 while only being "y % more money", let me tell you something. That's analagous to being in the mood for a couple of potato chips while your at the gas station for say 75 cents for a 2 oz bag, while the moron standing in line behind you shouts out that you can get a 10 pound bag of the same chips at Sam's Club for 8 dollars, and that's a much better deal because the cost per ounce is lower. This guy doesn't even really need a 9700, so any amount spent beyond that is wasted. Both cards will be essentially worthless in a few years, so why waste the money now, on something that's not necessary now, and never will be necessary and any point in the future, except as maybe a paper weight? /rantoff

Your analogy is a poor one. I'm not saying the 6800NU is better bang for buck. (like the bags of chips)

If you need to use chips, here's how I would use chips:

You could have some tasty, crisp, golden Lays Potato Chips as a snack for $3.99 a bag, or you could have some greasy, acrid, full of brown spots, stale Vintners Potato Chips for $1.99 a bag. Sure, they're both chips, but the quality of the experience is much better with one than the other.

How do I equate that to Doom 3? I don't think a 9700 will run D3 at a decent resolution or detail level with fluid animation. Once you lose that, the game is pretty much toast for me. Or do you like to watch the characters jerk and stop like zombies on angel dust?

Does your 6800 have VIVO Rollo? I thought the only VIVO 6800 was the leadtek one with the massive heatsink. But it costs $380 on newegg, so its not worth it.

spend $400 on a card you can play a few games on? he had a rage fury buy a 150$ 5900xt or a 9600xt and in a couple years buy a $150 card that kills a x800pro. that has direct x 11 support

Rollo forget everything else... Just listen to yourself. If a 9800pro can't provide adequate fps until 12x10 at these games then as Cainam stated 90+ % of the gamers would need an upgrade....
I think sometimes you get so passionate with our hobby that you forget the mainstream needs. On the other hand consider that it will be very very bad biz for the companies if they do that.

well, i'm not disagreeing that a vanilla 6800 wouldn't be a good option.. but hey, if he doesn't want to spend the money......

personally a tv card and a $299 nv 40 isn't a bad way to go, but he'd have to spend more $ than he says he's willing to.. which leaves a last gen card.

Jim, if this guy was Timmy Turner and had to mow yards another summer for that $100 I agree with you.

This guy is well off, buying $40K+ cars. He can somehow scrape up another $100 for a card that will give him a much better experience on the two games he mentioned, IMO.

I really think the 9700/9800 Pros are going to be low end cards in the year to come, with Far Cry the first taste of it. I realize they will play the games, but guys who drive $40K cars are used to a little better than what Joe Average is up to.
(unless I've woke up in some alternate reality where that car isn't costing him just shy of $800/month to drive even if he put $20K down on it)

What you say makes perfect sense but... It's somethin called choice. It doesn't mean that because you can afford to do somethin you must do it. He luvs and affords to buy a $$$car but he simply doesn't care so much about hardware to proceed with such a purchase. It happens everyday my friend in the real world. I mean look at his rig. -)
I have an Audi A3(older model) for 7+ years. I don't care if more advanced cars are out there, I care enough to keep this one. Makes me happy enough.

Look guys this card has everything on it he wants and it comes with a whole crap load of software. It can also OC to 5900U levels. It should run Doom III pretty well and do OK on HL2.

IMO the 9800 VIVO and the 5900XT VIVO are his best options considering everything.

You can get all manner of fine video in cards for <$50 shipped Sickbeast:

Then you're not married to a video card for it's VIVO. The only reason I'm not telling the OP he should be thinking GT or Ultra is I'm taking him at his word that he's not a big gamer. I wouldn't recommend a 9700/9800 to anybody who isn't strapped for cash as a HL2 and D3 card.

Rollo I think you need to relax a little. I've noticed you tend to defend your card a little vigorously.

If you haven't noticed the reason Mrs. Paratus and I can afford a Suburban is because we don't buy things we don't need or can't afford like $300 video cards or retail priced suburbans for that matter. Its called fiscal responsibility. (That and getting 1/3 off because a family member works for GM really helps ;) ) I have a budget of ~200 for a new card because the rest is going to processor, ram, and drives. Its all I feel comfortable spending right now.

I could afford a socket 939 FX53 with 1 gig of 222 ram and an HSI X800XT PE but it would be a complete waste of money. I'd never use it the way it was intended and it would be money better spent elsewhere.

With a growing family, long work hours, and a pretty busy schedule I can't justify to myself spending $250 - $300 even for D3 an HL2 when I'm only going to get to play them once or twice a week for an hour or two.

Being a tight ass with the money is a good way to stay out of debt.

Remember its not personal if I don't take your advice
Hope you understand.

And thanks to all for the numerous recommendations.

Trying to find you something decent for $200.
5900XT VIVO $188

9700 (non Pro) AIW $205

How about a cheap capture card? Newegg has some in the $33 range. Click the sort by price dropdown when you go to the page. That and the $180 9800Pro @ Best Buy is not too far over $200.

I hate to put you over budget, but I still think the $250 9800 Pro AIW retail @ CompUSA is very good deal. Worth the extra $50.

My advice to you would be the same if I was still using the 5800U. To me it just doesn't make sense to buy a 9700/9800 anything at this point in time, when you can afford better.

Your right in that your budget is your business, at the $200 price point that 9700Pro VIVO is probably the best you can do.

Good luck with it, I take no offense at not taking my advice.

He's gonna have to spend over $200 to get VIVO and a good card (ie at least a 9800 Pro) so why not go for an all-in-one solution.

As for the video card, I would ignore the FX6800nu altogether. Either go all out and get a 6800GT (line up for one of those ~$350 hot deals) or save money on a $180 9800 Pro. The FX6800nu isn't worth the extra $110 over the 9800 Pro IMO.

I guess what you can afford to spend and what you are willing to spend are two different things sometimes. I'm a DINK right now, and my wife could give a crap what I buy. I could blow 1k on a video card, if I wanted to. I don't want to. I would never want to. I swear to Allah or whoever that if I won 50 million in one of those halftime field goal kicking contests that they have at the Superbowl, I would not spend over $200 on a video card. It's the principle of the thing. I might buy a Ford GT for 150K, but I wouldn't buy some overpriced hunk of silicon so I could play pretty video games, and then brag about it like some big, um, dork. :-D

So let me understand what you say. You won't pay an extra 300$ for a gaming bliss but you're willing to spend 150k for a bunch of iron.

Even like this, it's your choice. I just told you that, because I could name you a major dork and $hithead for spending so much money for a car.(even if it was the best car in the world)

As you said in the beginning it's just a matter of choice.

Well I went ahead with my original plan. I bought the Asus 9600XT TVD with VIVO as I think its still the best fit for me.

However if I find that I really enjoy using the VIVO functions and need something better I will upgrade to stand alone card like this.

Plus if I find that this card can't handle games the way I want I'll go ahead and sell it an get 6800 series or x800 series card in 6months or a year. (But since I'm coming from a 32mb ATI rage fury, the 9600xt is a huge step up plus I'm using a nice 19in Planar LCD with a max res of 1280x1024 so I won't need a card capable of push high fps at 1600x1200).

Again thanks to all of you for the help ;)
