I know I should be thankful to even have a job, but

a 5% raise that results in me taking home less per paycheck this year than I did last year is kind of a kick in the nuts D:

not much less, but it's still like 1 step forward and 2 steps back when your raise doesn't even offset increased taxes and health insurance costs.

I haven't got a raise for 2 years. Nobody complains b/c IT in the bay area is hard to come by now. The companies have all the power now and are really flexing it. In my opinion companies actually like these "poor economic times" b/c it gives them an excuse not to give raises and take away other benefits. You don't see the execs taking pay cuts or missing bonuses though. Companies in general or so friggin' corrupt nowadays.

Everybody aspires to work their way up the social stratification hierarchy. It's in our nature.

put more into your 401k to offset it and bring down your taxable income.

Thats what i try and do.
it's like a 3-part raise (1/3 in the winter, 1/3 in the spring, and the last third in the summer)... hopefully when the second third kicks in in April, I'll actually see an increase in my paycheck.

I'm also hoping to move from my current apartment where I'm paying $1000/month in rent into a new apartment where I'll be paying $550, so once that happens I probably won't care about taking home $10 less per month. lol.

What I like the most about you, loki, is that you make threads to state the things I want to state but am too lazy to make a whole new thread about. <3

Dude to be thankful for anything is so unAmerican, you should feel entitled like most of the members in this forum. Get with the god damn program!!😉

Taxes don't work that way. The higher tax bracket rate only applies to the amount you're earning above the last bracket limit.

I thought ATers were smart. How many of you morons thought you could actually earn less by getting a raise? If you're actually earning less, than your company is doing something else to you that's NOT connected to the tax system and is hoping you won't figure it out. Health insurance costs are another matter... I don't know how those work.

gorcorps, increased taxes could mean an actual higher rate at state or local levels. Also, a raise can affect your federal taxes badly, if you were on the verge of surpassing an AGI limit for a deduction.

I guess 'increased taxes' is sort of vague. I figured the OP meant he went up a bracket, but it looks like he never said such a thing.

If he's taking home less than he was before the raise, it's safe to assume that he went up a tax bracket.
