That's wrong. Nearly all cpu fans blow air onto the heatsink.
Many CPU fans suck air off the heatsink. And it works fine that way too.

Not very many. And it doesn't work as well. The vast mojorit - at least 99.9999999% blow down. Go to your local OEM shop and take a look at their HSFs, they all blow down. Only some freaky specialty ones suck instead of blow and not very many at that.

Some suck some blow, but AIW is right, the vast majority blow air onto the HSF. Some HS are designed to cool better with sucking than blowing, but not many. Try it each way, then you decide for your own HS.

I have already tried it with my heatsink/fans. It really made little difference. Indeed, proper case airflow seemed to be more important.

EDIT:

BTW, I have owned some alphas too, and yes they sucked air from the heatsink. And they of course were way better than the stock heatsinks that blew air to the heatsink. However, of course it really had nothing to do with the fan, but the heatsink design itself obviously.

The point is I think people worry too much about suck vs. blow when carefully applied thermal paste and proper case flow in conjunction with that heatsink/fan is probably more important.

Eug,
I couldn't agree w/you more. :) I've had more friends say "fix my computer...it keeps shutting down after an hour or so" and then I go in and the HS is "sitting on the ledge" or some other malady like that. Heheheh, or the infamous "forgot to remove the plastic peel-off thingee" on the pink pad! :D

I've tried reversing the fan on a volcano 7 and a stock AMD heatsink so that they sucked instead of blew...and yes, they did suck. load temps increased by about 3-4 degrees C

I just follow the instructions on the box. If it says suck, then that's the way I mount it. If it says blow, that's the way I mount it. (I did the suck vs blow testing just for kicks.)

I just wanted to point out that there are several heatsink/fan combos out there that do suck air, and they work fine.

Not always true. It depends on the airflow of your case. My temps were much lower with the fan on my 8045 blowing down onto the heatsink since I had a side intake. See this thread for more 8045 tips and opinions.</thread drift>

you sound like amateur assembler to me. Those Vantec heatsink come with it blowing down or DID YOU NOT SEE THAT.

Adul is correct, with very few exceptions you want the fan blowing on the heatsink for maximum performance!

Yep, I have that heatsink myself and the fan blows down.

The dustiest HS I've seen was in my Dad's K6-2, there was a layer of dust under the fan so thick that there was virtually no airflow on the HS at all. His Athlon was almost as bad when I checked it a couple days ago.

what an overwhelming response....thanks for stopping by folks.

This is indeed a Vantec Aeroflow, and yes...the fan blows DOWN...lmao.

I just cleaned it with some good air pressure, but found myself left in a fog of dust...

I think I'll make note to clean out my system every 3 months at minimum...hehe.

EDIT: CPU Temps have dropped from 45-50 degrees C to 36 - 40 degrees....hehe.
