I knew there was a reason for keeping your HS clean.

I haven't cleaned it out until this summer. Also, there is a large intake blowing on the the heatsink, so I'm gonna change that to a blowhole. What a mess though.

Holy crap! I'm amazed the heatsink still performed well wnough to keep you CPU from exploding! My HS never gets that dirty because I take a leaf blower to my computer every 3 months.

the fan on that HS does suck, i was talking about a 120mm fan that is on the side of the case that blows right onto the motherboard ... I'm sure it has something to do with the amount of dust making it into my case...

(by SUCK, i mean suck air...lmao..that sounded odd)

That's wrong. Nearly all cpu fans blow air onto the heatsink.

AIWGuru, the high performance units like the Alphas pull air from the heat sink. This has been true as far back as the slot 1 and slot A models and continues to my 8045 Alpha. Putting the fan on to blow onto the heatsink is a common error for amateur assemblers.

And this is relevant how?
You said most.
MOST, in fact 99.99% of HSF blow down.
You were wrong.

I disagree. Putting the fan to BLOW onto a heatsink IS NOT a "common error." The Alpha is the only heatsink I've ever seen that actually "sucks up" from the heatsink and blows upwards instead of downwards.

I'd hazard a guess that 99% of the CPU heatsinks manufactured in the past 10 years blow down onto the fan. You're right about the Alpha, but a little off on that "common error" part. ;)

I've never tried it, but I'd say that if I flipped the fan over on my SLK-900A to blow up instead of down onto it, the performance would suck. Get it? "suck?" :D I made a funnay! :D

ps
Oh, this is positively one of the filthiest heatsinks EVER. :Q In fact, I saved the pic for future use. Kind of a "don't let this happen to YOU" type dealie. :D

Many CPU fans suck air off the heatsink. And it works fine that way too.
