Theres a reason that part of the country is so expensive to live in, they milk everyone else for all theyve got.

And yet those of us living in NOVA bitch about Richmond taking all of our money to build massive highway overpasses no one uses. :p

Most money coming into NoVA is for roads and airports. You think anyone in DC cars about NoVA, no. They care about being able to get in and out so they dump a pile of money into anything marked transportation.

Then Richmond likes to skim from NoVA for other areas of the state. So they always play the “NoVA needs more…” yet then skim a nice cut off the top.

Its probably another example of why looking at how much a state contributes vs. receives is a stupidly simplistic way of looking at things.

For example if the Federal Government renovates the White House it probably counts as DC receiving government spending.

When really that is entirely different than saying supporting someone's bastard kids with welfare.

Ca #s also do not normally count the input value of military bases.

Is it any coincidence that Maryland has the highest average income in the country? Those people are sucking hard on Obama's tits.

Part of the trouble with the federal/state government balance is that the fed controls more money. teach what they want you to teach or get no money from Dept of Ed. Set traffic rules fed recommends or get no DOT funding. If the states were willing to collect more taxes and spend how they like they could have more control. Fed should really just be paying for the interstates and federal properties rather than funding the states themselves.

This. I bet if you really dug into it you'd find all sorts of things like that. Are naval bases in California a benefit only to California or not? How much of the benefit goes to California?

I know he said this was ex-defense, but you can think of other national programs/spending that have to be located somewhere.

A big reason for MD, DC and VA getting the bulk of the benefits is because these are where DC workers live and government contractors are based. The benefits aren't welfare payments, its employee costs and military spending.

No one said it was welfare.

Although many residents also collect welfare in this region.
