I knew Canada had a tank, I did not realize they had helicopters as well.

To a lot of people it's more of a priority, but the fact is that for its size the Canadian military is a joke, and it's irresponsible IMO. People in the US are out of work and need healthcare as well, and yet they find the time to sink some real funds into the military, because they don't have a big brother to fall back on.

Perhaps if Canada shifted from its typically liberal voting to something else they could get some nice helicopters, and spur the economy ahead!

The canadian military is in a pathetic state due to lack of funds and these helicopters are simply a discrace.

I just find it terribly scary that 12 of 40(something) down and we still let them go up. And that article said no replacements are planned for another 3 years (2006).

Don?t give me this bull sh!t about social programs when out hospitals are full and the education system is a total mess.

Well said.

i agree we need to put more money into military. i just don't understand why we don't have the money to do it, we pay so much taxes.

all of the current political parties suck and aren't going to do anything about anything. i just voted liberal because i didnt want the alliance to come into power.

and besides, nobody really cares about canadian politics anyways ;)

Well it's because the gov't blows it on bullsh*t like throwing money at the natives anytime they cry foul about 200 year old treaties. That's just one example. EVERYONE in canada votes liberal because they're scared about change. Well that's why chretien sits there doing nothing on his aging ass!

The only way they'll learn is if a conflict should arise and the U.S. turn their backs on us. Otherwise, this deterioration of our military will continue till out soldiers are fighting with sticks and stones.

In any other country, the Sea kings would be decommissioned after those 8 deaths.

Those helicopters are way past their life, they need to be scrapped. The cost to keep them flying is far more than the cost to replace them.

Governments are so stupid... :(

It doesn't take an obsessed person to know all of Canada's military. And one tank and one chopper hardly make up a military.

Sigh. Who do you think is responsible for that peace? It has more to do with your ally to the south than it does with canadian politicians.

i was really young when that happened and so i am not sure if that is exactly what happend, but i am sure thats the jist of it.
Yes there were a bunch of Choppers that were gonna be bought from Europe and then the silly liberals decided to continue to axe the military. The canadian military is in a pathetic state due to lack of funds and these helicopters are simply a discrace.

The stupid thing is they cut the EH-101 (I think that is what it was called) purchase and years down the line they are thinking of buying a cut down version of the same heli and it costs lots more :|

Cheers,

Canada tells the U.S to mind its own business when it comes to military matters....

seems that the sentiments voiced by the canadians on the forum are representative of how their government feels...only gripe i have about the whole matter is on the behalf of the 8 men who died from the sh*tty choppers they are still forced to fly. those men shouldn't have died because their governemnt felt it wasn't necessary to get new choppers. i don't care if canada doesn't want to increase its military spending and join the U.S. in whatever actions we pursue, but dammit they should spend enough money to keep their own soldiers safe.

You are a disgrace to the Canadian fighting men who have died to keep your socialist ass free.

they got their priorities in different places. that's fine i guess. they can rely on the US for protection so they don't really need to increase their defense spending. its nice to have that luxury. I agree with you though, if your not gonna increase your defense spending, then you gotta reduce your forces to maintain a decent readiness level. They probably just end up commiting less internationally if they don't get any more money soon.

Yeah, the Sea King and it's future replacement will only be used for military purposes only, loaded with mark-46's and sonobuoys. It's not like the chopper is actually used for anything, you know, stupid things, like civilian search and rescue and carrying things around.
