I kinda want a G4. Does anyone else?

I use two G4 cubes to raise my midtower case so I can feel like I'm playing with the big boys and have the same height as a full-tower!

Actually the best thing about those cubes is that pretty neato switch that just sorta comes on before you even touch it! They are definitely becoming quite the decoration to have among the stupid!

Well...I'd only want a computer like a iMac or Mac laptop because I'd probably only need it to check my e-mail and do some word processing.

I think it may be cool to have one, and maybe even fun to use if it had more than 128MB memory and a decent video card (500MHz CPU would be fine).

But apparently they don't come with decent insides even when you run up to $2000+?

I've never seen Mac OS crash, so I don't know what it's like as far as stability since some of you seem to think it's horribly unstable (I mean, more unstable than Windows? That's a pretty bad insult).

I saw 128MB PC133 SDRAM the other day for $89. You say $300 for 128MB PC100 SDRAM? Yikes.. And is that American currency? I am talking Canadian here, $89 for 128MB PC133... And my friend has seen it cheaper.

Don't get a Mac unless you want to waste a lot of money. What's wrong with your current computer anyway? I'm still using this P83 and I don't want a Mac..

Nothing's wrong with my computer. It runs fine. All's I'm saying is when time comes to upgrade my system, I think I might get a G4. You know G4s come with Dual 500MHZ CPUs and Radeon's now? That's hella cool! This all for $2600 sans monitor.

we just got some G4s at my school. i dont understand why anybody would choose one of them over a PC. The frekin mouses on those things are a top quality pain in the ass, and everything seems much harder than it really has to be. for example, deleting, making shortcuts,.. almost anything else you can think of. bottom line Macs suck. PCs rule!!
oh wait i forget they look real cool. <-----who gives a sh*t!!

I've used a couple of the new (after Blue and White) Macs and they are VERY rockin. The system is more efficient than a Win98 box. Not to mention the Altavec (sp?) instructions (like 3dnow!) are awesome. In stuff like RC5 (does anybody else care?) a 450 outperformes an Athlon 900 (IMHO).

I'd buy one, but I just don't need it. And they still don't do everything a 'dows box does. If I want that kind of compatibility, I'll run linux - its cheaper.

I can't respect the Mac until they start using mice with more than one button. Anyways, anyone know if the Mac's are good for SETI?

I think they're kinda cool. I like the pro mouse, and OS X looks nice. I'd get one if all I did was some surfing and stuff

Hey, I use to own a mac. They're not too bad. There's pros n cons with everything. And the new OS X looks pretty cool. But yeah, I had a PowerMac9500, boy was that thing unstable....

I would get a cool lookin cube for surfing and stuff, but just too much money.

My roommate has a dual G4 500 w/ 192 megs of ram and he can do a seti packet in about 1/2 the time my athlon 935 w/ 384 megs of ram can do one.
-Zoson
EDIT: his computer crashes about 5-10 times a day though, while mine running win2k only crashes once a month.

Architectually, the motorolla processor inside are supposedly better than that of the x86. (don't flame me for this. I might have read this somewhere but forgotten) Motorolla came out with what is essentially 32bit processor while the 8086 was at 8bits I think.

And as evolution goes, this is why they can perform better at RC5.

That and Zoson, he had two processors and you have one. ;)

Macs are OK. But I would not get them. Sure they can emulate windows and with a certain software run windows apps, have a neat case, and supposedly their OS is supposedly "liquid" when running (hence aqua if I remember what my friend called it) I would stick to the PC because it is more mainstream.

And yes, ONE BUTTON MOUSE IS SUCK! :) Even with support for multibutton mouses, the OS itself only utilizes ONE BUTTON!

PC all the way!

Uhh... No that's not it. The RC5 client have support for Altivec.

It is? hehe ;)

I think the P4 might have a good chance at being #1 in RC5. SSE 2 has support for 128bit registers (I think that?s what its called... forgot [guess your right ;)])

If only the P4 was not that "disposable" in the future for a different socket and the sliced off features as well as expense and RDRAM... Yes P4 looks really good.

But my Athlon is intended to stay for more than 3 years. No more AnandTech for me. I might get impulsive from the tempting new hardware. ;)

Macs are alright. 64 megs of ram hurts performance for most modern real-world applications on either platform though.

Obviously they are a lot easier for the average newbie to use. And that's why the company has survived until now. Because they mainly target the AOL-using iMac-color-coordinating customer and institutions where lots of easy to support workstations have to be deployed.

The redesigned models helped lagging sales, but better engineering is their best strategy now. If this new G4 chip comes out. There may be hope for Apple still :)

I like PCs, but.. I'm a sinner.

I lust for a cube.

I used to work at Apple, and when I did, I was a zealot. As a recovered Mac Zealot, let me tell you - the Mac has almost nothing on a PC. The only thing I can think of is the complete ease of hardware installation. There are no IRQ conflicts or DMA addressing issues to worry about. That and the fact that they finally shipped with Firewire.. which took them too long to release on their own machines (playing catch up to the PC world since Sony shipped with 1394 long before Apple did).

But, what you do get to worry about is the crash happy nature of the MacOS. If you've ever experienced those lovely bombs with error type 10 or 11, then you have experienced the crashiness of the MacOS. The Mac is still living in the past in so many ways.

The MacOS lacks protected memory, SMP (as does Win9x/ME), preemptive multitasking and the G3 has a subpar FPU that is taken from the 603 series (very bad). The G4 is better, but buying a dual CPU version is useless unless you plan on running OS X - which itself is bad due to it's slowness and completely different interface than the previos MacOS (it's NeXT - not BeOS, Macified). Anyhow, I'm just glad they are actually going to release MacOS X. After floundering with Copland, it's about time they released something modern.

The reason Macs didn't ship with Radeon's for so long is because ATI releasing some information early that they weren't supposed to. Mr. Calm and Rational, aka Steve Jobs, decided to get back at ATI by not announcing anything to do with the Radeon at Macworld and, from what I have heard, decided not to release Radeon's on Macs for quite some time as well. This is really rather unfortunate since the Radeon is sooo much better than outdated Rage Pro. But, leave it to the Macintosh world to play catch up.

If you really want a laptop, got for a PC laptop. It's a better investment, IMHO.
