I rearended a vehicle just recently as well... I'm only 19 and happened to look to the right for a second or two and looked foward and hit the back of a van... It didn't do anything to my blazer but my tow hooks put 2 holes in her bumper.
Doesn't seem like it was a horribly bad incident so I don't think insurance will skyrocket.
of course it was wet and my antilock brakes screwed up but oh well, it all worked out just fine...
Bad accident or not.. if there was a claim through insurance and you're at fault, your screwed. Doesn't matter if its $500 claimed or $50,000. That's why when you phone for a quote and they ask if you've been in any accidents.. not "Have you been in any little low prices ooopsie fender-benders?"
Best way to do it if you can and the victim will agree is to just pay out of pocket.
Good luck to both of you though.. I think you're going to need it.
