I just watched Reagan's Challenger speech...

And all I can say is that it made me cry. I was too young to really remember any of his presidency, and I take issue with many of his politics, but that speech was one of the best I've ever heard. Masterful.
 
I said his Trickle Down Economics bullcrap was just that at the time.

He was not just good with that Speech but that one was probably his best at a very bad time.
 
I was at home sick from school the day the Challeneger exploded, and was excited to get to watch the launch on TV (this was back when it was a big enough thing to put on TV) and then boom, it was gone. I was so shocked I didn't know how to react, I ended up staring blankly at the TV for hours afterwards. 🙁

I remember it live in class. It was surreal.

Yeah, his speech was good, however Reagan had a knack for giving good speeches. I have a little collection of Reagan speech videos, but this one I didn't have. I'll have to get it.

I watched it live on TV. We had TV's on carts, and I was in history class for the launch. So they wheeled in a TV cart and we watched takeoff, and the subsequent explosion. It was a really big deal to teachers nad schools because of Christa McAuliffe.

BTW - he got his good speechifying voice from his days in radio. Play by play commentator.

:roll: The speech did have content, IMO, and spoke to everyone affected by the loss.

Actually, yes. IIRC he was supposed to deliver the SOTU address that day, but spent the afternoon with his speechwriter putting together the speech.

Would you deny that a great deal of a speech's success comes from the delivery as well as the content? I'm not denying that Reagan had help from the speechwriter - I have no idea if he just sat there staring at the wall while it was being written or if he wrote it with the speechwriter's assistance - but Reagan's delivery made for much of the impact.
 
It depends how you define a great speech. Personally, I think the content is more important. I'll give extra points if the speechwriter is the presenter and makes a good presentation.

Great! So in your opinion the speech is lacking in content? Or the speech is discounted because Reagan didn't write it himself?
