I just walked out on There Will Be Blood

Yeah I know, it's the greatest movie ever, blah blah blah. Couldn't stand it. I'm not a "HURR HURR SMASHY THINGS AND BIG NOISES!!!!11SHIFT" moviegoer usually, but this one made no sense to me.

Why'd Daniel kick the shit out of Eli?

Why'd Daniel's kid set his bedroom on fire?

etc....

I suppose it's possible those answers were forthcoming if I'd stayed for the whole thing, but frankly I wasn't that desperate to know. Daniel Day was of course excellent, but his supporting players were either yawn or cringe inducing. I guess I'm either too young or too stupid to appreciate "artsy" movies like this.

More the Speed Racer kind of guy huh?😉

I thought it had quite a bit of potential until about 3/4 through. Then I completely lost interest and turned it off...rather disappointing as I wanted to like it.

Why'd Daniel kick the shit out of Eli?

Did you make it to the part where Daniel explains that the only reason he seeks to be wealthy is to escape people since he hates the so much? Eli embodied what he hated most; zealotry, self righteousness, superstitiousness, simple mindedness, and a desire to manipulate and exploit those even more feeble minded then he is. Daniel also described how competitive he was by nature, illustrating how his character is a manic alpha male (so to speak.) Eli's desire to dominate, exploit and manipulate was a shot across the bow to Daniel which I think is the chief reason why he responded to Eli so.

Why'd Daniel's kid set his bedroom on fire?

The kid was emotionally disturbed by the trauma of hearing loss. Daniel wasn't exactly the most nurturing of characters (despite his effort to be) and that may have exacerbated the child's issues.

etc....

I'm not sure I would describe this movie as artsy, but I suppose that depends on how you define the term. There are some movies that add value by not explicitly answering all potential question or tying up all obvious loose ends. It's the questions you're left with at the end that add to the feeling of uncertainty and uneasiness, and these are no less emotional responses than the adrenaline rush of an action movie, or the sense of dread from a thriller; uncertainty and uneasiness, however, provide more ground for analysis than does the later two.

If you didn't like the deliberate sense of ambiguity this movie employed than I'm guessing you didn't (or won't) like Lions for Lambs either. I watched that movie with a colleague who was baffled and upset that it ended as "suddenly" as it did.

Agreed. Although I stuck with it to the end to see if it ever made any sense or got better. It didn't.

He set Daniel's brother's bed on fire, this came after a scene where HW (the kid) got into his stuff and found a diary. This becomes important later as Daniel figures something out about his brother.

Should have watched the whole thing. Awesome movie with an fantastic ending.

I thought Daniel's contempt for Eli was obvious given the dialogue between the two.

I never contemplated why HW set the bed on fire. K1052's explanation makes sense though.

I absolutely loved the movie. My wife hated it.

I think HW sets the bed on fire cause he finds out that DDL's brother is a phony via the journal so he was just trying to protect his dad.

Looks like this is one movie that won't end up in my netflix queue.
TY for the heads-up on this one 🙂

Try it again in a different mood. I tried watching 'Good Night, and Good Luck' last night but was too tired to watch a slow, dialogue-heavy drama. Switched it off about 25 minutes into it and will watch it later when I'm in the right mood.

'TWBB' might be a victim of excessive hype but I liked it a lot more than No Country for Old Men. Of course, I liked Into the Wild more than any of the movies nominated for Best Film this year. The nominees were weak this year - they were all fine movies but none of them will be remembered or honored as 'must-see' movies a decade - or even a few years - from now.

Check out 'The Kingdom' for a decent 24-like drama with an action-heavy climax and light political commentary. The ~50% RT/Metacritic rating is mighty misleading.

See I don't understand that because the diary actually DID belong to Daniel's real brother, didn't it? If that's the case, exactly how would the kid deduce that guy wasn't really his "uncle"?

On another note, I too thought the ending was awesome 😀 Bizarre, horrifying, hysterical 😀😀😀

One of my favourite movies of the last 10 years without a doubt, heck it definitely cracks my top 25 all time. Can't wait for it to come out on Blu-ray!

Presumably the entries stopped after his death and possibly included his illness. Either way he obviously figured it out.

DRAAAAAAINAGE!!!

I loved the movie.

The grittiness of the film, the slightly faded colors and the scenery/props were just perfect for immersing myself into the period and the character's feelings.

I was hooked on this film the whole way through and there was not a single point I was disappointed with it. One of my favorite movies to come out of Hollywood for quite a while

So 2-3 people don't like it and you simply won't watch it now. Are you and the OP butt buddies?

The first time I watched it I expected a morale or message in the movie and I think I was a little disappointed though only because of my incorrect expectations, then I realized the movie is basically about Daniel just being a fucking asshole and I liked it much, much more the 2nd time through. 🙂

I thought it was a pretty good movie. Not great, but it definately had interesting characters and plot. Well worth the watch. I didn't catch the part about the diary. I'll have to pay more attention the next time I watch it.

Ice cream tastes like shit, trust me, never ever, ever try it for yourself.

meh, you don't care about movies if you walk out on them, no matter how shitty they are, imo.

your opinion does not count now...speedracer 😉

imo, the movie was pretty decent, it made you think a bit, just like no country for old men.

that movie was awesome, though it took me until the end of it to actually figure out that eli had a brother (who took the money and ran) and wasn't just a schizo.
