The military is the number one patsy of the marketing scams. They'll throw out sodas that are a week past their best if used by date. It's so bad it's part of the military 's policies for public health. The military wastes millions following these ignorant policies. I believe it is part of a widespread scam by purveyors to bilk the military.

in 1988 i was in the air force and got sent to Ft. Dix New Jersey for some training that only the Army offered. I was there at Thanksgiving and the frozen turkey the Army cooks served was stamped 1971. :D

I had smoked salmon today(and yesterday) that "expired" August last year. It was packed in a mylar bag. Still tastes good. I have one more serving left. I might take it to work tomorrow.

I volunteer at a local food pantry. We are forced to toss anything past its stamped date of any kind for legal liability reasons. The resultant, wholly avoidable waste is distressing and obscene.
You must not volunteer at mine, because as far as I understand it, the policy here is that they can distribute canned goods that are up to 2-3 years "out of date". And that's true, I've gotten stuff a few years out of date from there. (*)

(*) Used to go to the local Food Pantry when I first got my apt., now I rarely go, as I can afford the grocery store, well, sometimes. Trying not to "steal from the poor", even though, legally, I am poor, so legally I still qualify. :|

Just don't eat all that much canned food, mostly Chef BoyRDee, from the grocery store ($1/can!). Also recently purchased $78 worth of Ramen bowls from walmart.com. Eight cases of Ramen bowls! Yum!

Edit: Btw, good to see you posting, Perk. Thought something happened to you, from a comment I read a month or so ago.

My SS is older than your SS. Double digits, easily. And I have canned goods older than that, for sure. I even have things on my shelves that I canned myself at least a dozen years old.

I remember seeing a report on this, pretty common despite there not being any legal precedent for someone being sued about it, just people being overly cautious.
God bless risk management, each and everyone (pointy headed dipshit mother snorgling camel humpers).
