ate about a bazillion of them for lunch and dipped them in the soy sauce.

just noticed that the soy sauce expired in 2015.

And...
I feel fine

Soy sauce is grains that went bad. I don't think it gets any worse in the bottle.

Typical soy sauce has a bazillion milligrams of sodium because of the salt in there, which probably preserves it well beyond the expiration date (normally that's just the "best by" date for freshness). You'll be fine.

You should at least put in some 3 year old lemon juice. Ponzu is a much tastier way to die.

Should last for several years. As long as it doesn't smell fishy, musty, or cheesy, you're fine.

Huh. I think I've got you beat. Yesterday, I pulled out a can of soup from my cupboard to eat. 2010 date. Let's open it and see. Hmm, some kinda film on top, maybe not good.

So, I pull out a can of chicken and rice soup, in white sauce. 2009. Let's open it. Looks fine, smells fine, tastes fine. Let's eat! :)

Meh, you should be fine. Worst case scenario: you get the shits and are hungry again in 10 minutes.

Last year I found a jumbo can of whole baby clams that expired in 2005. I didn't open the can.

It is not the date that should concern you, but the country of origin. I'd avoid any from the PRC.

Although when I was younger & dumber years ago, I lived on Pearl River Bridge soys. Now I won't touch them.

Salt expires?
My wife doesn't understand the concept of expiration dates and best-by dates. I think they're changing some of that stuff up....but many dates placed on items are put there by manufacturers for inventory control only....it allows them to move out old product and continue selling in their distribution chain whether a consumer buys the goods or not.

Traditional soy sauce is typically put in a pot in the back yard and fermented like sun tea because it picks up naturally occurring yeasts in the air....the stuff bought in grocery stores is typically not quite so adventurous as it's made in a controlled environment and bottled for speed. I'd say, even mass-produced chemically created soy sauce that's a few years out of date is somehow less-disgusting than traditionally brewed soy sauce from a yeast/mold standpoint.

It's not a "scam", people are just stupid and don't comprehend a difference between "best by" and "expires on".

It's not exactly a total scam, but it is a lawyer driven "avoid liability" thang with the added bonus of pushing more product through the supply chain.

I see that we are still confusing "best by" dates with arbitrary "expiration" dates.

The military is the number one patsy of the marketing scams. They'll throw out sodas that are a week past their best if used by date. It's so bad it's part of the military 's policies for public health. The military wastes millions following these ignorant policies. I believe it is part of a widespread scam by purveyors to bilk the military.

Yes, plus, even the "expiration" dates are ridiculously strict and arbitrary, solely for "extreme abundance of caution" in our litigious society.

I volunteer at a local food pantry. We are forced to toss anything past its stamped date of any kind for legal liability reasons. The resultant, wholly avoidable waste is distressing and obscene.

How do you toss it? If it were me, I'd stack it by the dumpster and load everything in at the end of the day or week as appropriate. If some of it walked off before I got to it, it would make my life easier.

^^^ What I would do if I weren't but a lowly minion. Rules get in the way of basic humanity all the damn time, something I take frequent pains to try and remind my fellow mods. Alas, they largely disagree. It's lonely at the top of the bottom. ;)

I remember seeing a report on this, pretty common despite there not being any legal precedent for someone being sued about it, just people being overly cautious.
