the pain and suffering of computers going obsolete seeemingly overnight. SLI sounds so enticing, yet I can't justify completely overhauling a system that has given me no major problems, except in HL2, nothing big, tuning down the settings fixed it up without any noticeable sacrifice in visuals. My next upgrade, whenever it may be, seems destined to be with SLI, I think i'd stay with nvidia because even if ATI comes out with their version of SLI, nvidia will already have had the chance to work out any bugs and the technology will be more mature, hopefully, by then. I'm thinking April to June of 2005. What do you guys think?

Umm, take a look at the benches at HardOCP first, before you fall on your sword.

Then take a look at what you *need*. For example, if you want to play HL2 or Far Cry at 1600x1200 4XAA 8XAF, you'll see that a ATI X800XT PE is right on the heels of a 6800GT SLI setup.

Yes, the 6800GT SLI setup is faster in all the tests. But it's also almost $450+ more expensive ($100 premium for the SLI motherboard, plus $350+ for an extra 6800GT PCIE). You'll probably need a new PSU too; another $100+.

So look at the benchmarks, and decide for yourself if SLI is going to make you happier.

I thought SLI was going to be the end-all, but now that I've seen the benches, I'm going to sit on my XT PE a little longer and trade it in for a X850 XT when they ship in the next few months.

A few little upgrades could make your computer much better, and you wont wish you had SLI so much:

For starters, get rid of that 2700 ram, because that means your CPU isnt running to its full potential. Get a Gig of 3200, even value ram is good enough. Secondly, get a 9800pro, which is a cheap upgrade and will run HL2 A LOT better than that 5700.

Do those 2 things, and your comp will feel a lot faster.
