while I have licensing concerns. (which quite honestly no one has figured out yet... When xp was coming out with activation, this same crap was said about it killing the homebuilt pc market.)
For an rc2, Vista is very well polished. Its smooth, runs using win xp drivers for some off my stuff. Boots in a similar amount of time as xp.
And yes you only see alot of the 'visual' stuff.
but its almost like buying a new car after a few years. The basic's are all the same, radio, steering wheel, tires brakes engine. PC OS's are becoming (on the general consumer level) very similar in the front end. Its so that you can do 90% of what you did and not have to learn everything over.
But those that don't notice the underlying changes are missing the bigger picture of what vista is.
is this release of vista going to be missing somethings? of course. every os grows, adds features etc.
I forone have a number of pcs that will need to be updated soon. And i'm going to for the most part move them all to vista. Its as stable as xp, if not more so. And the update security is very very welcome.
Will some/all of the secruity be cracked?, most likely yes. When you have thosands of people hate you, just because you exsit, its a matter of time.
But as the os gets stronger, it will require smarter hackers, and that means less script kiddies, and people that do stuff for 'fun'
And front row is playing catch up to MCE. Which I just got with vista and LOVE, esspically connected to my xbox 360, streaming backed up dvds with surround sound, and full dvd quality. Its bliss.
So yes if you are upgrading because something 'looks' prettier, you will be let down because it wears off quick.
but if you are moving with the knowledge, that in general, the new o.s. is stronger, safer, is more stable, and more secure, then Vista is for you .
An no M$ does not force anyone to use it. It became a 'standard' tool on its one. If it wanders too far from this standard it will die.
And linux fans, really just stop, for as long as I was using a pc, (since I was like 12, so 14 years now) I've heard this call for using linux, and other similar 'better' os's, yet not one has made a huge leap into becoming mainstream, if its sooo much beter and easier to use, and on and on, it would have caught on.
Look at Apple, there os-x is a great os, and its getting them more (small, but still growning) and more support, and users.
The os has got to a point were die-hard long term pc users, stopped and looked and bought. No linux box has done that in any quantity.
