I just tried Lindows

I messed around with Lindows last night and I'm really not sure what to think about it. I thought the idea of lindows was to make a linux operating system that's compatible with windows. It seems to me that they're just trying to make a Windows clone. Even as a novice linux user, I can tell that the linux part of lindows is very lacking in comparison with any main stream distribution. I'd think it would be easy to fix since they could just add their proprietary components to a good complete distribution (or would the GPL limit them in this?) And of course it's far from windows at least in its current state. As a long time windows user getting started in linux, I thought I was the target user for lindows. I guess i'm not. If they're just trying to duplicate windows, I see no reason to use Lindows when it will probably never have anywhere near the Windows compatibility of Windows. There's a lot of good windows software that linux would benefit from offering, but I wish they'd take advantage of the linux components already developed (again, does licensing inhibit this?). It's much too early to make a good judgement, but at this early stage it seems they are headed in the wrong direction or at least one that doesn't appeal to me.

Almost all the windows programs I tried didn't work, but I was pleasantly surprised with some of them. I didn't bother testing anything too windows oriented such as directx games. I have not yet experimented with non-lindows wine so I can't compare the two.

I think its targetted at people like you. People in a transition. I dont know for sure though. Oh well. Remember its still in beta though.

They can include closed source apps with a distro, I believe several of them already do.

Yeah, it is very much in development, so the real thing may be a lot different.

I must say though that it would be nice if they could sell the windows emulation components without the rest of lindows. That way you could use whatever linux version you want to. I think that's the function that most people care about.
