I've actually had a general protection fault while installing windows. I believe it only happens if you have windows already installed and are trying to re-install it. In my case I had registry (and I bleive more than just that) errors and couldn't just reinstall because of them, I had to format actually fdisk.

I had a similar problem myself. Tried to format/reinstall three times before I found out that I had a bad stick of SDRAM. Damn that frustrated the hell out of me!
