I just test drove a corolla

The Corolla XRS is not AWD, it's still FWD. The corolla XRS doesn't have the same drivetrain as the Matrix XR, which can be AWD.

The Matrix XRS is only available in FWD. The XR is available with AWD, albeit only with the automatic transmission.
Edit: Speedy edit there.. 😛

Don't tell that to mine..with stickier-than-stock stuff (aluminum flywheel and ACT clutch), it's still going strong past 160,000 miles..

a high 15 second car isn't anything special in this day and age
Mine can run a high 15..the XRS should be somewhere around 15.3-5..? I haven't had a chance to bring one to the track to test it out, though 😛

I wouldn't say that. Base Miatas don't even get into the 15s but they're still a blast to drive--e.g. something special.

A Corolla, however, is no roadster...

Well, they're talking about sleepers, which even the XRS corolla isn't against other new cars.

As for handling, the corolla uses a dead beam in the back. The rear suspension isn't even indepedent.

pretty sure he was talking about slickness and refinement. toyota trannies will last forever and are pretty good overall, but they are vague and mushy compared to honda trannies. hondas just go "snick snick snick." you'd think they were greased with hot butter and connected to nothing but perfectly weighted springs, with little indents in the throw for when the gear engages.

My mom had the same dilemma. Civic or Corolla? Civic or Corolla?

It came down to the shifter and the handling--mostly the handling. In her words, the Civic "could actually turn corners." (She was shopping a Civic LX vs. a Corolla LE.)

The steering on my Prelude was great. You would just think "left" and it turned left.

Wasn't it the RSX (err..RSX drivers) that was having mis-shift issues? 😛

I haven't driven a Honda manual, so I can't really compare..I have no problem finding the proper gear, but it could definitely be a little tighter.

I actually have a Scion tC, which isn't too bad at all, it's just kinda eh. I was looking to get another car, such as the RSX-S or the WRX, but damn they're expensive. Even though the corolla is just a corolla, that thing does pick up quite a bit. It's also very roomy too, that's why I like it.

I have a 1990 Honda Accord. Frankly, in its current state it is a POS.

That said, the Transmission is gold, even now that the clutch is almsot worn out....

I have driven a Geo Prizm (rebadged Corolla for that model year) and although the car had more pep than mine, it was quite brutal compared with my cars smooth shifts.

and btw, I wasn't saying that the XRS was AWD. I know that it is only FWD. I"m just saying that AWD rally edition corolla's are pretty badass ;p

And Ford Foci...man, I bet that RS edition would have been badass to have here in the states 🙁

I got all toyota and love them all but Corolla are not that good. Go get the scion tC instead and it's close to the same price range.

Misshift is a driver issue. Sometimes it's compounded by close spacing on the shifter but it's still a driver problem.

Besides, if you want to dig up misshifts, celica GTSes are also notorious for this. Toyota even lowered the rev limiter on those cars for 2 years because of this problem. Since the corolla XRS uses a revamped GTS motor, as these cars become more common, you're probably gonna hear more stories about newbie drivers who blow up their engines from misshifts.

I thought that the new Corolla's tend to drift into other lanes because they are tall and tend to catch the wind...
