I just spent $300 on a pair of fins and a dive mask

Would you guys recommend snorkelling for someone who can't swim? I like being underwater :)

It's just getting enough propulsion to get back to the surface that's hard. :(

Fins help. Yay!

Snorkeling when you can't swim? No I don't think I would recommend that. Get more comfortable with the basics first. It's worth it.

Are you into underwater photography? I am sure I will dive into that not too long from now(pun intended as bad as it was)

And thanks for the vote of confidence

Please learn how to swim first. There's nothing worse than a person panicking in the water. It really is easy so take some lessons.

While we're talking fins and dive stories....

This jackass had some seriously nice gear and talked up a storm before the dive. got him in the water and he was a panicked/sketchy SOB. knocked off my mask and my SOs mask twice on a night dive because he was so sketchy and unaware of his surroundings with his big fat fins.

Word to the newbies - you are not the only one in the water, when close to other divers avoid strong kicks and sketchy movement. OP - I know you're not a newb...just a miny rant.

I had the EXACT same thing happen. I was pissed, I talked to the guy after the first dive and just told him to watch where he was kicking because he knocked my mask off during the dive. It got better after that but I still got a few fin kicks to the head

I just go limp and guard my face. Or signal him to get the F away from me or stay away from him.

My buddy is close, nobody else needs to be close/within arms/legs length.

I know a guy who's wife works for Aqua Lung. They have a parking lot sale about once a year. I picked up a couple self purging masks for $5 each. Good dive fins and snorkels too as well as tons of wetsuits.

yeah UW photography gear is mega pricey.

My old man is currently looking for good housing for his Nikon SLR, and a top notch Subal one is like $3-4k AUD. He's been using a Nikonos V for about the last 12 years, rockin camera but just a bit limiting...

Just for curiosity's sake...Your profile says you live in Indiana. Where on god's green earth do you plan to scuba dive in Indiana? :p

As for your question - if it's something you really like to do, and you know you'll put the equipment to good use, I don't see a problem with that. You ought to try photography. Cameras aren't bad, unless you buy a DSLR. But good lenses can run a couple hundred at least, on up into the thousands.

Go to school in Indiana, live in Michigan during the summer. Yes, the opportunities are limited but there is quarry diving and the vacations to some places a bit more tropical ;)

LOL, and you think you're spending a lot of $$ now, unless you stick with P&S kits you're going to spend a ton on underwater camera equipment.

If you already have a camera and flash gun, you can do well with about 2k.

Here's the housing for my camera:

And for the flash...

And the lens port (this is the kit one)

Tell me about it.

In costa rica I met up with some octopus/eels. Framed them up nicely. Nice focus. Thought they would turn out well.

Nope. Grainy as hell, unrecocnizable, piss-poor shots not even worthy of printing or saving. I was ticked.

For a quality housing for a Nikon or Canon SLR/DSLR and a good flash you'll spend much more than that ;)

Not really...

Depends on what you want in a housing. A good Subal housing (and they are the best of the best here) is $3-4k iirc...a really good flash is $2-3k...

Very limited. Just P&S ultracompact digicam with its own underwatercase when we went to Cozumel, Key West, Maui, Philippines and New Guinea.

My friend on the other hand has $$K worth of underwater digicam gear. He's the one who looks awkward handcarrying them all on the airplane.

He will be doing the same exact thing if we ever make the Great Barrier Reef trip.

Thanks for reminding me... I need to pick up a new mask in the next couple of weeks... I want one that matches my eyeglass prescription; plus it's a reimbursable medical expense through my flex account :)

I taught SCUBA back in the 80's but don't dive anymore. It is an expensive hobby. Most things that are fun and gear intensive are expensive. I have a motorcycle now and it's just as expensive if not more.

Get what works and what you want and you're more likely to enjoy the sport longer.

Very best,

Gravity
