I just signed up for Dish Network

I got sick of Time Warner cable...my HD channels have been out since Feb 26th, the repair guy came out on March 12th, said "yeah...everyone around here has that problem"...then left.

I'm new to dish TV...any tips/tricks/things to watch out for?

I have had dish network for 3.5 years. only problem i had have had is when i wanted HD hooked up. they wanted like $500 for ONE BOX.

its free for new customers now

Only had it a couple weeks... biggest complaint is that I was about twenty minutes into The Doors in HD, when a storm came along and knocked out that channel. I still got lots of other channels, but couldn't get that one to come back.

New customers > existing customers.

That always pissed me off. When I wanted to upgrade my 5-year-old Dish account and add more receivers, they quoted me an ungodly amount of $$. I told them I had a mailer in hand from DirectTV that would give me everything I asked for for free, plus 12 free months of Showtime and Encore, and they said that was a great deal and suggested I switch. (!!)

So I did.

Also, I'd swear that Dish's satellites are lower on the the horizon or something, because storms a hundred miles to the south would interfere with our reception, whereas with DTV, it has to be right on top of us.

I had a lot more problems with dish than directTV but they did the same crap when I wanted the DVR. it was free to new customers but not for existing.

Yea, i had DISH recently and they're 'alright' no real complaints, but didn't care for the standard DVR box they have = sux0rs. I Switched from DISH to DigitalCable b/c it was around the same price (DISH just raised their prices). The Digicable was through BrightHouse...they SUCK SOME MAJOR ASS for their digitalcable, had 3 boxes (HD's in'em) die w/in 2 weeks so i cancelled. I'm now w/ DirecTV and am happy w/em. Their DVR box is sexy as well. ^_^ Also cheaper than DISH for what you get.

Dish is alright, however their billing habits SUCK, I deal with usually a few dish network disputes a day, vs in 6 months I have seen one with DirecTV.

Customer support varies. One time I wanted to add programming (and another Dish), and got switched to a knowledgeable guy somewhere in the US. Everything was cool. Two other times when I wanted to remove programming, I got switched to clueless script-reading guys in India, who not only wasted my time with mindless droning, but did not remove the programming I wanted, and I got hit with an extra charge. So I had to call in again a couple of weeks later.

Also, watch out: new users get HBO and something else for a couple of months free. The ad in the package you get clearly says: if you want them after that, you have to subscribe. That is, it will be canceled automatically. In reality, it's the other way around.

No problems w/ Dish here. I like them over DirecTV. More HD channels, and they carry IMF (International Music Feed) which plays music videos all day unlike MTV. DirecTV doesnt carry this.

We have it and we've never had a problem. The signal will go out at times during a storm, but you only have to wait for a bit for it to come back, as opposed to waiting for a cable guy who may or may not show up some time in the next month. We don't really need or use customer support, so I can't comment on that.

As others have said, new customers get all of the deals. Eventually when we upgrade to HD I'm sure we'll probably go to DirecTV so we can get the stuff much cheaper.

I like Dish, but wish their DVR sucked less. Needs to have a subscription feature like Tivo. Can't tell you how many shows I've missed because they move the time for a bouncyball game or something.

Both companies satellites are positioned on the equator in order to achieve geostationary orbit. DirecTV may have a more powerful satellite though, or its possible your dish wasn't properly aligned. It can be hailing here and we still get signal.

We're in San Antonio, 4 hours south of Dallas, and get dropped signal errors all the time. It's very aggravating.

it works

Same here. I wish the quality on the standard DVR were better (we see blurring sometimes and the video/audio skips every once in a while), but we'll be upgrading to HD soon, so hopefully that issue will go away.

If you ever have problems and have to get your DVR replace, they'll try to charge some replacement fee (I think it's around $20). We've had to have two DVRs replaced and have always talked them into waiving this fee.

I've had dish for almost 6 years and haven't had a problem.

Sure you lose the signal when a bad storm comes in, but it's no different than dirctv.

And upgrading to HD was painless. I had to pay $200 up front, but I got $20 off my bill for 10 months.

I've had Comcast , DirecTV and DISH. DISH is by far the best, IMO. Best service, channel selection, and I like their remote and TV guide best.
