I'd take it, but then I don't know how your dad might feel about it. First, whats the financial status of your parents? If its not that great, and thats the reason you won't take financial assistance from them, your dad might feel a little bad about not being able to provide for his son.

If they're doing decent, why would you take it from the guy, instead of him?

Without knowing that though, I'd take the money, and try to repay him through action. Take his kids under your wing, teach them what you've learned so they don't make mistakes.

Grand Rapids is an awesome city! Make sure to hit up all of the many bars downtown :)

I'd recommend: Flannagans, Mojos, The Black Rose, Taps, Gardellas, Z's, etc. etc. etc.!

If you need help with those ladies let me know, I'll be back in town next month ;)

The problem is that your parents might be pissed? Simple solution, don't tell them. If you don't expect any more financial support from your parents, then it seems like your finances are separate from theirs... you handle your own college bills, so how would they know if you're paying it off with loans or a grant from this guy?

Ok, Here's the situation... It's very complicated, so I apologize if this runs long.

This evening, over IM, a good friend of my family offered to assist me with tuition payments when I return to finish school over the spring/summer semester.
I stopped here. Take it. Unless the friend wants special favors in return...and then still take it. Never refuse a gift of this magnitude.

My Does alright, he makes alot of money, but is also burdened with debt, as well as child support for my younger bothers...

he helped pay for my first two years of college (along with help from scholarship and inheritance from my grandparents)

Take the money. When you are rich and successful yourself, return the favor to someone who needs it.

Ask our parents. They would probably say yes. But I would feel a lot of pressure to make the best grades possible if I did this, simply because it was a gift.

if you are a "serious" student and not an alcoholic screw off, then accept the gift as a scholarship, its the same thing. rich people setup scholarship funds all the time for strangers, you just happen to know this dude

About right, take the money, and be happy that you're debt won't be nearly as bad as it would have been had you gone another route.

Most people don't get the chance...you have it. To not take it is like...blasphemy or something.

Do it, but make a deal that you'll report all grades to them and do your damned best. Perhaps you may end up getting a post graduate degree afterwards...
